- Maine opens Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) action when it plays host to Monmouth on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears are looking to start 2-0 at Alfond Stadium for the first time since 2018 and 1-0 in league play for the first time since 2018 when it opened the season with a 35-7 victory over New Hampshire.
- The Black Bears enter the contest 4-0 all-time against the Hawks. Maine won the first meeting between the two programs, 21-14, back in 2007 before defeating the Hawks on the road, 21-7, in 2008. The Black Bears defeated Monmouth, 31-23, at Monmouth in 2010 and won the most recent meeting, 38-28, back in 2022 on Homecoming Weekend in Orono. Maine is 2-0 at home against Monmouth, taking the 2007 victory at Alfond Stadium and again in 2022. In Maine's 2008 meeting with Monmouth, current head coach Jordan Stevens tallied five tackles, including a TFL, for the Black Bears. In the 2022 victory, the Black Bears forced three turnovers to go along with five sacks. That win marked the first CAA victory over Monmouth, newcomers to the league at the time.
- Maine, which began its season with a 17-14 victory over Colgate at Alfond Stadium, is coming off a 41-24 loss at #3 Montana State. The Black Bears, who dug a first half hole, were able to outscore the Bobcats 17-3 in the second half. Carter Peevy found Montigo Moss and Declan McKevitt for touchdowns while Trevin Ewing added a third rushing score in the contest.
- Through two games at Maine, quarterback Carter Peevy ranks fourth in the league in completion percentage (65.4). Peevy has played a role in at least one touchdown in 14 of his last 15 games with a pair of passing touchdowns and one rushing score this season. Peevy has found 11 different receivers for at least one reception this season with his leading target being Montigo Moss. Moss has tallied 10 receptions with one touchdown this season and ranks fourth in the CAA in receptions per game (5.0) and ninth in receiving yards per game (65.5).
- A year after ranking 10th in the CAA in passing defense (239.3 yards per game allowed and 24 touchdowns surrendered through the air), Maine currently checks in fourth in the league in passing defense. Through two games, Maine is allowing 178 passing yards per game with just one passing touchdown against.
- Monmouth enters action in search of its first win with losses at Eastern Washington (42-27) and at home against Lafayette (40-35). The Hawks feature the CAA's top ranked passing offense at 372.5 yards led by former Black Bear quarterback Derek Robertson who threw for 2,933 yards with 25 touchdowns a year ago while at Maine. Despite having the CAA's top ranked offense (434.0 yards per game), the Hawks rank 16th in the league in total defense allowing 536.5 yards per game and 41.0 points per game. Monmouth is allowing 338 passing yards per game, 111th out of 115 FCS teams, while allowing the opposition to convert on a CAA high 60.7 percent of third down attempts.
- Maine returns 15 starters (7 Off., 7 Def., 1 Spec) from its 2023 roster and 37 total letterwinners from a year ago while welcoming in 35 newcomers including 12 transfers. Maine also welcomes three new coaches to the staff at tight end, defensive line, and safety. Mikahael Waters has been elevated to offensive coordinator after spending the previous five years as an assistant on the staff, while Umberto Di Meo was promoted to defensive coordinator after one season on staff.
A Maine Win Would:
...Be Maine's fifth win over Monmouth (4-0)
...Be Maine's fifth-straight win over Monmouth
...Move Maine to 3-0 at home against Monmouth
...Give Maine a 2-0 start at home for the first time since 2018
...Move Maine to 1-0 in CAA play for the first time since 2018
