Black Bears Fall Short to Retrievers

ORONO, Maine – UMBC held off comebacks from the University of Maine softball team in both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, holding on for 10-7 and 10-8 wins.

How it Happened
  • The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second and then made it 4-0 in the third.
  • UMBC and Maine both put up single runs in the fourth frame for a 4-1 Maine edge after four.
  • The Retrievers pushed six runs across the plate to take a 7-5 lead in the top of the fifth on just three hits as the Maine pitchers gave up seven walks.
  • An Anna Margetis sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth made it a one-run game before UMBC took a 10-6 lead in the seventh.
  • Gabby Papushka led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and then came around to score … the Black Bears had the tying run at the plate but UMBC got the final strikeout for the 10-7 final.

How it Happened
  • UMBC and Maine traded runs in the first frame for a 1-1 after one score line.
  • The Retrievers then steadily built an 8-1 edge with two runs in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Black Bears used three consecutive singles to load the bases for Caitlyn Fallon … Fallon sent a grand slam over the fence in left center field.
  • The Black Bears then used a single from Kennedy Priest, a double from Maggie Helms and an infield single from Katie Jo Moery to make it a one-run game with two outs before UMBC got the final strikeout.
Game Notes
  • Caitlyn Fallon went 1-for-3 with a grand slam … it was her second home run of the season and the first grand slam of her career.
  • Fallon's grand slam was the first for Maine since Kya Enos on Feb. 19, 2022.
  • Maggie Helms was 1-for-2 with her second double of the season.
  • Katie Jo Moery was 1-for-3 for her sixth multi-hit game of the season ... she has a five-game hit streak.
  • Anna Margetis (1-for-4), Krista Francia (1-for-3), Keira Inman (1-for-3) and Kennedy Priest (1-for-1) all registered hits for Maine … Francia scored two runs.
  • Isabelle True started, going 2.0 innings while giving up six runs – four earned … Alysen Rieth threw 5.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs while striking out a season-high six.
