Preview: Border Battle up next for #5/6 Maine

Maine and UNH will meet at the Whittemore Center on Friday night.

ORONO, Maine – The Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle will be renewed this weekend when the #5/6 Maine men's ice hockey team travels to New Hampshire to face the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22 at the Whittemore Center.
 
The Hockey East contest will air live on NESN and will stream on ESPN+, with an international stream available via Hockey East/Stretch Internet. The games can also be listened to via 92.9 FM or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio.

WHAT'S ON TAP
• The Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle will be renewed this weekend when Maine travels to New Hampshire to face the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22 at the Whittemore Center.
• Maine and UNH met four times last season, with the Wildcats winning the three-game regular season series two games to one while the Black Bears won the Hockey East Tournament quarterfinal matchup.
• The Black Bears went 1-0-1 at home against Boston University this past weekend while the Wildcats went 1-0-1 in a home-and-home series with Northeastern.
 
A WIN ON FRIDAY WOULD. . .
• Move Maine to 8-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in Hockey East play.
• Bump Maine to 2-2-1 on the road.
• Move the Black Bears to 73-64-13 all-time against the Wildcats.
• Give Maine the first win at the Whittemore Center since Feb. 2, 2019 and snap a seven-game road winless streak.
 
SERIES HISTORY vs NEW HAMPSHIRE
• Maine holds an overall record of 72-64-13 in the all-time series with UNH, including an overall mark of 2-2-0 last season.
• UNH dropped a contest at Maine, 5-2, in December but swept the Black Bears, 6-2 and 5-2 at the Whittemore Center in February ... the Black Bears bested the Wildcats, 5-0, in the Hockey East Tournament quarterfinal round.
• Ten current Black Bears have at least one point against UNH ... Lynden Breen (4-3-7) is Maine's active scoring leaders against UNH ... Nolan Renwick (1-3-4) and Josh Nadeau (3-0-3) have chipped in four and three points, respectively.
• The Wildcats and Black Bears first played on Dec. 15, 1979 at Alfond Arena, with John Tortorella scoring the game-winning goal in the Black Bears' 5-3 victory.
• Current Maine assistant coach Alfie Michaud had seven career wins against UNH, including a stretch of five-straight beginning with a Feb. 1, 1998 win and stretching to the April 3, 1999 National Championship, 3-2, overtime win at Arrowhead Pond.
• UNH Director of Hockey Operations Jim Tortorella was a goaltender for Maine from 1977-81.
• Maine has had two different nine-game winning streaks in the heated series.
 
ABOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE
• The Wildcats enter Friday night's game at 4-3-2 overall and 1-2-2 in Hockey East play.
• This past weekend, UNH went 1-0-1 against Northeastern … after earning a 4-1 win at home, the teams battled to a 1-1 tie at Matthews Arena (with Northeastern winning the shootout).
• Ryan Conmy leads the Wildcats in points (10), goals (6) and shots on goal (44) … six total players have at least five points each, including Colton Huard with a team-high five assists.
• Goaltender Jared Whale has started all nine games in between the pipes, going 4-3-2 with a 2.10 goals against average, .912 save percentage and one shutout.
• The Wildcats have a ranked road win over a then #10 Quinnipiac squad, 3-2, back on Oct. 26.
 
UP NEXT
• Maine will kick off a seven-game non-conference stretch next weekend, traveling to New York to face RPI.
• The Black Bears and Engineer will face off at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30 and Sunday, Dec. 1.
