Preview: #6 Maine set to open up Hockey East play at RV Northeastern

Maine opens up Hockey East play this weekend with a pair of games against Northeastern at Matthews Arena.

ORONO, Maine – The sixth-ranked University of Maine men's ice hockey team opens up Hockey East play this weekend with a pair of games against Northeastern at Matthews Arena.
 
Puck drop between the Black Bears and the receiving-votes Huskies is set for 7 p.m. on both nights. Both tilts will stream on ESPN+, with an international stream available via Hockey East/Stretch Internet. The games can also be listened to via 92.9 FM or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio.

WHAT'S ON TAP

SERIES HISTORY vs NORTHEASTERN
• Maine holds an overall record of 57-58-21 in the all-time series with Northeastern ... the Black Bears are 19-33-0 at Matthews Arena and 37-22-10 at Alfond Arena.
• The teams met three times during the 2023-24 season ... the Huskies won 6-3 in Boston on Feb. 2 before splitting a series later in the month ... Maine won the first night, 5-1, before falling the next night, 4-0.
• The first ever meeting in the series was on Dec. 1, 1977 at then-Boston Arena where Northeastern won, 7-4.
• The Black Bears have not won at Matthews since Feb. 25, 2012, going 0-14-2 in that stretch.
• Ten current Black Bears have at least one point against the Huskies, with Josh Nadeau's 1-3-4 line leading the way.
 
ABOUT NORTHEASTERN
• The Huskies enter Friday night at 1-2-0 overall after dropping a pair of games at defending National Champions and top-ranked Denver this past weekend ... Northeastern dropped both games by a 5-2 scoreline.
• Northeastern has four players with four points each in Dylan Hryckowian (2-2-4), Jack Williams (2-2-4), Vinny Borgesi (1-3-4) and Cristophe Tellier (1-3-4) ... overall, the Huskies have had six different goal scorers and 11 different point getters.
• Cameron Whitehead has played every minute in goal, going 1-2-0 with a .894 save percentage and 3.34 goals against average.

THE BOBCAT RECAP
• Maine earned 2-1 and 6-5 wins over a #7/8 Quinnipiac squad last weekend at Alfond Arena for the first top-10 sweep since sweeping at #4 Boston College in January 2020.
• On Friday night, the Black Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to Nolan Renwick and Charlie Russell and then hung on for the 2-1 win.
• On Saturday, Maine saw a 4-1 lead early in the second period transform into a 5-4 Quinnipiac lead with six minutes to play ... Brandon Holt's goal with 28 seconds to go in the third sent the game to overtime where David Breazeale fired home the game-winner.
• Twelve different Black Bears had a point in the series while all eight goals were scored by a different player ... Harrison Scott had five assists -- including the primary assist on both game-winning goals and Holt's overtime forcer -- and earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors.
• Scott's four assists marked the first four-assist game for a Black Bear since Mitchell Fossier did it at Quinnipiac in October 2019.
 
AN ODE TO THE OPENER
• Maine opened up the season on Oct. 5 with a 6-0 win over AIC at a sold-out Alfond Arena.
• Nolan Renwick had two goals and two assists while Taylor Makar had two goals and one assist ... Ross Mitton recorded three assists ... nine total Black Bears had at least one point.
• Albin Boija made 17 saves for his third career shutout.
• Renwick's four points marked a career-high while his two goals marked his first career multi-goal game ... Makar's three points were a career-best.
• It was Maine's first home-opener sellout since the 2007-08 season.

UP NEXT
• Maine will return home to host Merrimack on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2.
