Orono, Maine -- The No. 3 seed University of Maine women's basketball team opens the America East playoffs when it hosts No. 6 Binghamton in quarterfinal action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
Maine is making its 37th appearance in the America East conference tournament and carry a 51-26 overall mark in conference post season play into Wednesday night. The Black Bears are 17-7 all-time in the quarterfinal round and have won each of their last seven quarterfinal games. Maine, 2-0 all-time in postseason play against Binghamton, will meet the Bearcats in postseason action for the first time since 2017, a 57-40 quarterfinal win by Maine.

Orono, Maine -- For the fourth time this season, Adrianna Smith posted a 30 point effort with 31 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season as Maine earned a 69-65 victory over Binghamton on Senior Day in Orono.
Smith, who finished the day 11-of-20 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the free throw line, posted her 11th double-double in her last 17 outings while finishing with double-figure scoring for the 19th consecutive game. Anne Simon added 18 points and five assists in the victory while Olivia Roockwood chipped in a trio of triples for nine points off the bench.
Maine, which controlled the boards by a 41-34 margin, assisted on 15 of its 24 makes while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor and hitting 15-of-21 (71.4) from the free throw stripe.
The Black Bears, who never trailed in the contest, used a hot shooting third quarter to help seal the deal. Maine finished the third period 11-of-14 including hitting all three triples it took.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears roll into the postseason winners of two in a row, and three of their last four, with a mark of 8-5 at home this season. Maine finished the America East regular season at 11-5, marking the sixth straight season with double-digit conference wins. Adrianna Smith, the America East Player of the. Year, became the first player since Sheri Turnbull (UVM - 1993-94) to average 20 points and 10 rebounds during conference play as she completed the season at 23.5 points and 10.8 rebounds in league action. Smith, who has tallied double-figures in 19 straight games, is averaging a league best 18.0 points and league-high 9.5 rebounds with 15 double-doubles, good for 14th best in the nation. Anne Simon, an America East All-Conference second team honoree, returned from injury two games ago and has posted double-digit scoring in each of her last two game. Simon is averaging 12.0 points and 3.7 rebounds on the year and recently moved into 11th on Maine's all-time scoring list at 1,310 points. Caroline Bornemann has posted 10 double-figure scoring performances this season and ranks 23rd in the league in scoring (9.3) and 11th with 5.9 rebounds.
A LOOK AT BINGHAMTON:
The Bearcats earned the number six seed after stumbling into the playoffs on a five game losing streak. Despite ranking fourth in the America East in scoring defense (61.0), the Bearcats have allowed 67.2 points per game during their current five game losing skid. Defensively, Binghamton leads the league in steals per game (8.8), turnovers forced (17.6), and turnover margin (+2.4). Offensively, Binghamton ranks fourth in the league at 61.3 points per game. Denai Bowman leads Binghamton in scoring at 12.9 per game to go along with 3.4 assists, second best among team leaders. Ella Wanzer is adding 11.2 points with a 40.1 percent mark from three-point range while Geneviece Coleman rounds out the double-digit scorers at 10.6 points. Clare Traeger is averaging 8.3 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds.
SERIES WITH BINGHAMTON:
Maine and Binghamton will meet for the 47th time, and second in as many outings, with the Black Bears holding a 31-15 advantage. Maine, which has won 20 of the last 23 meetings, will be looking for its eighth-straight win over Binghamton after sweeping the season series with a 50-46 victory in Binghamton and a 69-65 win in the regular season finale on Saturday. In that win, Adrianna Smith led the way with 31 points and 19 boards. In two games against Binghamton this season, Smith is averaging 24.0 points and 17.0 rebounds. Maine and Binghamton first met in 2001, a 63-62 overtime victory by the Black Bears. Maine is 15-4 at home in the series.
The Black Bears are 2-0 in postseason play against Binghamton winning the first postseason match-up between the two teams, 78-71, in a 20015 quarterfinal meeting before taking the most recent playoff meeting, 57-40, in a 2017 quarterfinal contest.
