Baseball Drops Weekend Finale Against Northern Illinois, 6-3

Box Score Cary, NC – The University of Maine baseball team fell on Sunday in the final game of the Penn State Tourney against North Illinois University, 6-3.
 
First Inning: Colin Summerhill drove in the opening run of the contest for NIU on a single to right field. The run was unearned.
 
Third Inning: Matt Salomonson was called on in relief in the third inning for NIU. Brandon McPherson fired two shutout innings in the start, allowing no hits, 3 walks, 1 hit batter and striking out 3.
 
Connor Goodman tied up the contest in the bottom of the third frame at 1-1 as he hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Quinn McDaniel (BB).
 
Fourth Inning: Jeremiah Jenkins grabbed the lead for the Black Bears as he hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Ryan Turenne (1B) on the play.
 
Fifth Inning: Parker Shupe doubled to center field and tied the contest up at 2-2 in the top of the frame. Shupe later scored on a wild pitch.
 
Nick White tied the contest up in the bottom of the frame for the Black Bears as he hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Jeff Mejia (1B).
 
Seventh Inning: Gianni Gambardella came on in relief of Noah Lewis. Lewis turned in a solid start on the mound as he earned a quality start, going 6 full frames, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, 2 walks and striking out 9.
 
Colin Summerhill gave the lead back to NIU as he hit an RBI double to center field.
 
Eight Inning: Mason Kelley added on to the NIU lead as he hit a solo home run to left field.
 
Matt Salomonson's day came to an end following a leadoff walk drawn by Nick White. DJ Hess was called on in relief. Salomonson went 5 innings in relief, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits, 3 walks and striking out 2.
 
Ninth Inning: Parker Shupe added an insurance run as he hit a solo home run to right field.
 
Matt Salomonson (1-0) grabbed the win in relief.
 
Gianni Gambardella (1-1) took the loss in relief as he allowed 3 earned runs on 4 hits, no walks and striking out 3.
 
DJ Hess (1) picked up the save for NIU as he went 2 innings allowing no runs on no hits, no walks and striking out 1.
 
Maine (2-4) will travel to South Carolina on March 3-5 as they take on Winthrop in their next weekend series.
