Box Score Cary, NC – The University of Maine baseball team dropped their second contest on Friday against Monmouth, 4-1.
Fifth Inning: Mason Miller began the inning on the mound, spelling the end for Joey Ventresca. Ventresca pitched four shutout innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and strikeout 7.
Sixth Inning:
Luc Lavigueur began the sixth frame on the mound for the Black Bears, spelling the end of the day for
Colin Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald turned in one of his best collegiate performances on Friday evening, hurling 5 shutout frames, allowing 3 hits, 4 walks and striking out 8.
Seventh Inning: Phil Stahl drove in the first run of the evening as he singled home a run for Monmouth.
Ben Winstead added on in the frame with a two-run triple. Casey Caufield capped off the four-run inning with a sac-fly.
Ninth Inning: Monmouth turned to Ryan Bearse to wrap up the game in the ninth inning, spelling the end of the day for Mason Miller. Miller was stellar in relief, allowing no runs on no hits, 2 walks and striking out 7 in relief.
Nick White continued his great job coming off the bench for pinch hitting spots for the Black Bears as he hit his first home run of the 2023 season in the top of the ninth.
Ryan Bearse wrapped up the 4-1 victory for Monmouth, allowing 1 run on 1 hit, no walks and striking out 1.
Mason Miller (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
Luc Lavigueur (0-1) took the loss in relief as he allowed 4 earned runs on 5 hits, 1 walk and striking out 3 over 3 innings of relief.
Maine (2-3) is set to take on Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 25 as part of the Penn State Tourney, first pitch is TBA with weather being a factor on Saturday.
