About the Series:

  • The Black Bears (2-3-0) and Friars (0-4-0) are both looking to pick up their first Hockey East conference win, as both teams sit at 0-1-0 in league play.
  • The two teams competed four times last year, as they faced off in the Hockey East quarterfinals in the postseason.
  • Providence stole all four games from Maine in the 2022-23 season, but the Black Bears pushed them into OT to pick up one point during their third matchup.

Scouting Providence:

  • The Friars are off to a rocky start, sitting at 0-4-0. Providence has not seen a four-game losing streak to start their campaign since the 2015-16 season.
  • St. Lawrence and Quinnipiac are the two teams who swept the Friars thus far, scoring 15 goals against, while the Friars have tallied four goals for.
  • Goaltenders Hope Walinski and Mireille Kingsley have been splitting time between the pipes for the Friars, each getting a game against both teams.
  • The Friars were selected third in the pre-season Hockey East poll and started the season ranked 14 in the USCHO poll. They have since fallen out of the top 15; however they are still receiving a few votes.

Black Bear Notables:

  • The Maine Black Bears (2-3-0, 0-1-0 HE) fell to UNH last weekend in a lone conference-game, by a score of 3-2.
  • The Black Bears gave up three quick goals in the first period and struggled to get back on top. Two third-period goals got them close, but they were unable to finish the comeback job.
  • First-year Ashley Kokavec is on a four-game point streak, (2-4-6) as she earned one assist in the loss to UNH.
  • Fifth-year Ida Kuoppala notched her 51st goal in last weekend's loss, as she scored the first goal for Maine, which was assisted by Rahel Enzler. Kuoppala now sits at 51g, 44a for 95 points total. Kuoppala added the assist as on Maine's second goal, as she is on a three-game point streak and currently leads the team in points with 9 (5g, 4a).
  • First-year forward Haley Ryan scored the second goal for Maine, for her second career goal.
  • All three goaltenders have seen minutes in the past five games for Maine. Senior Jorden Mattison played in last weekend's loss to UNH, making 19 saves on 22 shots.
  • The Black Bears' penalty kill check in at 87.5%, as they've successfully killed off 14 of 16 power play opportunities of their opponents.
  • The Black Bears are averaging 35.6 shots per game.
