PREVIEW: Women's Basketball hosts UAlbany in annual Cancer Awareness Series game

Maine looking for its sixth-straight win

Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team carries a five-game win streak into Wednesday night when it hosts UAlbany in a battle between the league's No. 2 and No. 3 ranked teams and a rematch of last season's America East semifinal contest. Maine has won nine in a row against the Great Danes, including seven straight on its home court. The contest also marks Maine's annual Cancer Awareness Series game, presented by Black Bear Inn and Conference Center.

Tickets are still available for Wednesday night's game and can be purchased online at GoBlackBears.com/tickets or by phone at 207.581.BEAR. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+, and can be heard across the Black Bears Sports Network and locally on 92.9 The Ticket.

Wednesday's game will mark Maine's Cancer Awareness Series contest, presented by Black Bear Inn and Conference Center. The Black Bears will wear their special edition pink jerseys during the game and will be auctioning them off with all proceeds going to support Northern Light Cancer Care. A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears return home following a three-game road trip riding a five-game win streak as they've begun conference play undefeated on the road this season (6-0). Maine has been especially impressive on the defensive end of the court during its five-game win streak. The Black Bears have limited their last five opponents to just 41.8 points per game, not allowing over 46 points in a single game during the stretch, and have registered 63 total steals (12.6 per game). The Black Bears are forcing 19.0 turnovers over their last five games and have recorded double-digit steal totals in four of the game. Anne Simon, who has recorded double-digit scoring in each of her last 14 outings, leads the league in scoring at 16.1 points. Simon enters play needing just eight points to reach 1,000 points in her career. The junior guard ranks sixth in the nation in steals per game (3.2) with six or more steals in five games this season. Maeve Carroll, the reigning America East Player of the Week, has recorded double-doubles in each of her last two outings while notching double-digit scoring in her last three. Carroll leads the league in rebounding (8.3) and has registered double-digit rebounding in eight games this year. Alba Orois continues to lead the league in assists, recording 5.3 per game overall and 5.8 in league play. Orois, who ranks 29th nationally in assists, has tallied 64 assists through 11 league games.

A LOOK AT UALBANY:
The Great Danes enter play red hot and winners of each of their last five outings and are a perfect 11-0 on their home court this season. UAlbany enters with the league's top defense, allowing just 46.9 points per game this season and check in second best among league leaders in turnovers forced (17.4).Their +7.1 rebounding margin is also tops in the league as they enter averaging 12.4 offensive boards per game. Kayla Cooper ranks sixth in the league in scoring and leads the Great Danes in both scoring (12.2) and rebounding (7.4) while Helene Haegerstrand is adding 11.3 points

SERIES WITH UALBANY:
Maine and UAlbany will square off for the 48th time in history. Maine holds a 28-19 edge in the all-time series and has won nine-straight against the Great Danes. The Black Bears swept all three meetings year ago, including a 67-47 victory in the last meeting in Orono on March 7, 2021 in the America East semifinal round. Maine is 12-6 all-time at home against the Great Danes and have won seven in a row at home against UAlbany.
