PREVIEW: Women's Basketball looks to extend win streak to eight, host Hartford Wednesday

Contest will mark Maine's Military Appreciation Game, presented by Dead River Company

Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team puts its seven game win streak on the line when it hosts Hartford on Wednesday at the Cross Insurance Center at 7 p.m. in the annual 'Military Appreciation Game', presented by Dead River Company. The Black Bears are 29-11 on their home court against Hartford and have won each of the last eight meetings in Maine.

Tickets are available for Wednesday night's contest online at TicketMaster.com or by purchasing in-person at the Cross Insurance Center box office. Wednesday's game will be streamed on ESPN+. The game can be heard across the Black Bears Sports Network and locally on 95.7 WWMJ-FM.

Military Appreciation Series, presented by Dead River Company:
The University of Maine athletic department is proud to once again bring to our service men and women its Military Appreciation Series, presented by Dead River Company. This partnership, in its sixth year, provides the opportunity for the Black Bears to honor our military men and women at select athletic events over the course of the 2021-22 season. A major component of the Military Appreciation Series partnership with Dead River Company is to provide all military personnel, veterans and their immediate family members complimentary tickets to each of the selected games. The third game date in the series will be the Women's Basketball contest on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m. against Hartford at the Cross Insurance Center. Military personnel and veterans with proper identification are asked to call the ticket office at 207-581-BEAR to reserve complimentary tickets for themselves and their immediate family members or stop by the will call table in the lobby of the Cross Insurance Center on game night to pick-up the complimentary tickets.

A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears continue to roll, entering action riding a seven game win streak after most recently moving to 7-0 on the road in league play with a win at No. 1 seeded Stony Brook. Over the win streak, the Black Bears are holding opponents to just 45.6 points per game and have limited four of the opponents to 45 or fewer points. Maine, outscoring the opposition by a +11.0 margin over the stretch, is forcing 16.9 turnovers in the streak  with 10.6 steals per contest. Individually, Anne Simon is averaging 15.6 points per game in the streak while Alba Orois (10.3) and Caroline Bornemann (10.1) are chipping in double-digit averages.

Anne Simon, the reigning America East Player of the Week, continues to lead the league in scoring at 16.4 points per game with double-figures in each of her last 16 outings. Simon, who recorded her 1,000th career point two games ago, currently ranks 23rd on Maine's all-time scoring list. On the defensive end, Simon 11th in the nation at 3.0 steals per game and checks in 15th on the program's all-time steals leader list. Maeve Carroll has recorded double-digit scoring in four of her last five outings and enters play second in the league at 8.3 rebounds per game. Carroll just two rebounds shy of becoming the 11th player in program history to eclipse 700 rebounds in a career. Alba Orois leads the America East in assists, checking in 26th nationally at 5.4 per game. Eleven times this season, Orois has produced six or more assists in a game.

A LOOK AT HARTFORD:
The Hawks have lost five in a row after suffering a 61-59 setback to New Hampshire on Monday. Hartford is 1-11 on the road this season and will be heading back out on the road to Maine after playing its last four games at home. Hartford enters play last in the America East in scoring (52.8) and scoring defense (72.3) with a -19.5 scoring margin. The Hawks featured the highest number of turnovers among America East programs, giving it away 21.5 times per game, but enter tops in the league in three-point field goals made per game (6.2). Paula Maurina leads Hartford in scoring at 11.4 points per game. Nina Farkic leads the Hawks in assists (2.6) while adding 8.1 points while Carmen Villalobos leads the way with 6.3 rebounds per game to go along with 6.5 points.

SERIES WITH HARTFORD:
Maine and Hartford will meet for the 84th time in history with the Black Bears holding a 54-29 advantage in the all-time series. Maine is 29-11 at home against the Hawks and have won each of the last eight meetings played in Maine. Maine also enters with a seven-game overall win streak in the head-to-head series. The Black Bears have won 14 of the last 15 meetings between the two teams. Earlier this season, Maine handed the Hawks a 65-44 loss in Hartford. The Black Bears featured four scorers in double-digits in the win, led by Alba Orois with 15 points, six rebounds, and four assists. The teams first met in 1985, a 71-53 victory by the Black Bears. Simon has recorded double-figure scoring efforts in each of her five outings against Hartford and enters play averaging 13.8 points in the series.
