Box Score Albany, N.Y. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team opened its game at UAlbany on an 18-4 run and never looked back, securing a 66-48 victory in game one of the weekend series on Saturday afternoon at SEFCU Arena. The victory marks Maine's seventh win in a row over the Great Danes.
Maine featured four scorers in double-figures, led by
Maeve Carroll and
Blanca Millan's game-high 16 points efforts. Carroll, who finished 8-of-8 from the free throw stripe, tallied her season-high scoring output while Millan has now tallied double-digits in all 10 of Maine's games this season.
Dor Saar added 15 points, five assists, four rebounds, four steals, and a block while knocking down three treys in the contest. Saar now stands just two triples shy of tying Cindy Blodgett's all-time mark for three-pointers made in a career at Maine (219).
Maine, which has now forced 20 or more turnovers in two-straight games, turned the Great Danes over 21 times while posting a 25-5 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Black Bears posted a season-high 16 makes from the free throw line, going 16-for-17 from the stripe. Maine was also efficient from the field, shooting 23-of-56 (41.1) on the afternoon.
The Black Bears, who have now strung together four-straight victories, were able to distance itself early from the Great Danes. Maine, working off fastbreaks coming from UAlbany turnovers, pieced together a 12-2 run as layups from Simon and Saar gave Maine an early 12-4 edge. The sprint continued as Maine closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take an 18-6 lead into the second. The six points were the second fewest allowed by Maine in a quarter this year, and its fewest since the season-opener at Providence.
UAlbany trimmed the deficit to nine but Maine answered in a big way. An 11-0 run, with six points coming from the free throw line, gave Maine its largest lead of the half, 33-15, with 2:08 on the clock.
A three from Saar late in the third began a 13-0 run by the Black Bears, expanding Maine's lead to its largest of the contest, 61-36, with 7:05 to play.
The Great Danes were unable to get closer than 18 the rest of the way as Maine scored its fourth-straight win by a 66-48 final.
Maine and UAlbany close the weekend series on Sunday with tip-off set for noon.
