Box Score W. Hartford, Conn. -- For the third time in four games,
Blanca Millan bested 30 points as she tallied her sixth career double-double with 33 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Maine to an 85-57 victory in its America East conference opening matchup at Hartford.
The victory moved Maine to 4-0 for the first time since 1986, and just the fourth time in school history, while extending Maine's overall win streak to 14 in a row. The 28 point margin of victory is the most by the Black Bears since it defeated Binghamton, 95-66, on Jan. 27, 2019. The 85 point total is the most by the Black Bears since it posted 87 in a win over Hartford, also in last year's America East season opener.
Millan's point total moved her into 27th on the America East all-time scoring list, with 1,656 career points, and just 16 points behind
Sigi Koizar for seventh in Maine scoring history. The fifth-year guard also added three assists and a pair of steals to her stat line while shooting 11-of-19 from the floor including a 4-for-8 showing from 3-point range.
Anne Simon added a double-double, the fourth of her career, with 13 points and 11 rebounds while
Dor Saar knocked down six triples on her way to a 24 point afternoon. Saar also surpassed the 200, 3-point plateau and now stands just six triples behind Ashley Underwood for second on Maine's all-time 3-point field goals made list. The senior point guard also added a season-high nine assists on the afternoon.
As a unit, Maine finished the contest at 48.4 percent from the floor (30-62) with a season-best 13 triples as it collectively shot 38.2 percent from behind the arc.
The game's first six minutes featured three lead changes and two ties before Simon's layup gave Maine an 11-9 lead. The Black Bears would never look back.
Maine built off from Simons' first quarter bucket with a 10-5 run to close the quarter, getting back-to-back triples from Saar late in the period, strengthening its advantage to 21-14 after one.
Maine was able to build a large halftime advantage after outscoring the Hawks 21-8 in the second quarter. A 5-0 run from Simon early in the period gave Maine its first double-digit lead of the contest, 28-16. Maine closed out the first half on a 9-0 run, extending the lead to 20 at the break.
The Black Bears remained hot from outside in the third as a pair of triples from Millan and one from Saar helped Maine to a 9-2 run, extending the advantage to 56-29 midway through the period. Millan would tally 13 of her game-high 33 points in the third quarter alone.
Maine pieced together a 12-2 run to really put the game out of reach in the fourth, with nine of the 12 points coming from Millan. A rapid, 6-1 run, with all points coming from freshman
Alba Orois, gave Maine its largest lead of the contest, 85-51.
Maine would cruise the rest of the way, moving to 1-0 in league play after an 85-57 victory.
The two teams meet again on Wednesday at 1 p.m. to close out the two-game set.
