Box Score LOWELL, Mass. -- For the first time in 13 overall meetings, the Black Bears were unable to defeat UMass Lowell, falling on the road to the River Hawks by a final of 66-57. The second quarter proved to be the difference, with UMass Lowell outscoring Maine 25-10 over the 10-minute stretch.
Anne Simon, who finished 7-of-8 from the free throw stripe, led all scorers with a game-high 15 points, finishing in double-digits for the seventh time in her last eight outings, to go along with seven rebounds.
Maddy McVicar added 11 points, finishing with double-figures for the fourth time in her last five games.
UMass Lowell held a slim 40-34 advantage on the boards while outscoring the Black Bears 40-24 in the paint. Maine finished 20-of-52 (38.5) from the field, 5-of-22 from 3-point range, while knocking down 12-of-15 free throw attempts.
The River Hawks were impressive in the second and fourth quarters, shooting 17-for-28 over the two periods.
Midway through the first, with the Black Bears trailing by one, a triple from McVicar ignited a 12-2 run. Saar followed up McVicar's trey with one of her own. The run continued on
Kira Barra's deep jumper before a runner from Saar lifted Maine's lead to 17-8 with 47-seconds left in the first.
The River Hawks closed the gap to one before taking a 20-19 lead with 6:48 left in the half. UMass Lowell was able to close out the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 36-27 advantage into the break.
Anna Kahelin started the scoring in the second half with a layup but UMass Lowell answered, staging a 5-0 run to build its largest lead of the contest, 41-29, with 3:32 gone in the third.
Maine, which trailed by nine after three quarters, opened the fourth with a 4-0 run. UMass Lowell built the lead back to eight but Maine once again had the answer.

Maeve Carroll and Simon, who tallied 11 of her points in the second half, began a 7-0 run. Three free throws by Simon followed as Maine clawed itself back within a point. Soon after, Fogarty would match a UMass Lowell triple with one of her own, maintaining a one-point deficit.
However, it would be as close as the Black Bears could get, falling on the road to the River Hawks, 66-57.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 18 when they travel to take on Binghamton at noon.
