No. 24 Maine Set to Open Season Against No. 19 Rutgers, Providence

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine field hockey team takes the field this weekend for the first two matchups of their 2019 schedule, first traveling down to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights on Friday at noon before returning home to host the Providence College Friars at 1:00 PM for the Black Bear's home opener.

ABOUT THE BLACK BEARS
  • Maine has won four of their last five season openers, including last year's 9-1 victory over Holy Cross to start the year.
  • The Black Bears enter the year ranked No. 24 in the preseason Penn Monto / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. 
  • Sophomore Mia Borley returns to handle netminder responsibilities after starting 20 of 21 games last year and posting a 1.36 goals against average, the second-best mark in the America East.
  • The Black Bears were picked second in the East Division in the Preseason Coaches Poll with 21 points and one first-place vote, trailing UAlbany's 25 points and five first-place votes.
  • Maine finished with a 16-5 overall record last year, eventually being defeated by UAlbany in the America East Championship by a 2-0 final.
ABOUT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
  • Rutgers put up a 13-6 overall record last season, including an impressive 9-2 mark at home.
  • The preseason Penn Monto / NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll picked Rutgers at No. 19 in the nation to start the season. 
  • The Scarlet Knights qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1986, receiving an at-large bid after falling in double overtime to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals.
  • Graduating just two seniors from last year's team, Rutgers returns nearly the entire starting lineup from a year ago, led by a pair of returning First Team All-Conference winners in juniors Gianna Glatz and Daphne Groothuis.
  • Head Coach Meredith Civico returns for her eighth year at the helm of Rutgers Field Hockey, having already amassed 65 career wins.

ABOUT THE FRIARS
  • Providence posted an 11-8 overall record last year, including a 4-3 mark within the Big East.
  • Their season came to an end in the Big East Semifinals, a 4-0 loss at the hands . of no. 15 ranked Liberty University.
  • Mary O'Reilly and Corinne Kenney return to the field for the Friars after being named Second and First Team All-Conference respectively a year ago and both being named Preseason All-Big East this year.
  • Providence was picked to finish third in their conference this year, trailing only Connecticut and Liberty in the rankings.
  • Head Coach Diane Madl enters her 19th season leading the Friars with 162 wins over that time. Coach Madl started her coaching career in Orono, serving as an assistant coach for nine years before heading to Providence in February of 2002.
