Maine Shutsout Sacred Heart in Back-to-Back Contests

Box Score ORONO, Maine- The Black Bears scored in bunches today, allowing them to go down to Sacred Heart and come away with the weekend sweep and a 2-0 record to start the season.
 
            The offense got off to another fast start, as just 1:11 into the first period, Brittany Colton found the back of the net. She was assisted by Michelle Weis. Maine was just started it get rolling, as not even two minutes later at the 2:59 mark into the period, Ida Press found the back of the net to lengthen the Maine lead and get herself her first point of the new season. Brittany Colton picked up the assist on the play.
 
            The Black Bears were able to put another score of the board as the first period neared its conclusion, as Vendula Přibylová scored her first of the season, giving Maine the 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Ali Beltz and Ida Kuoppala had assists on the play.
 
            The second period was more of the same for the Black Bears. Ida Kuoppala netted her first collegiate goal seven minutes into the period, while Vendula Přibylová picked up the assist. With just four minutes remaining in the period, Maine was able to score goal number five, coming off the stick of Ally Johnson. Tereza Vanišová and Daria Tereshkina picked up the assists.
 
            Maine came out firing in the 3rd period, scoring two goals within the first minute of the period. The first one coming off of Ali Beltz's stick just 23 seconds into the period. Přibylová and Taylor Leech picked up assists on the play.  33 seconds after the Beltz goal, Claire Coffman scored her first collegiate goal, increasing the Black Bears lead to 7-0. Maddie Giordano picked up the assist on the play.
 
            Carly Jackson was able to come away with the win in the contest, moving to 1-0-0 on the young season, while also picking up her first shutout on the 2019-20 season.
 
            For back-to-back games, the Black Bears controlled almost every facet of the game, outshooting the Pioneers 43-16 while winning the faceoff battle 35-20. Maine also scored on three of their eight power play opportunities in the game.
 
            The Black Bears will look to keep their good momentum going as they head home for the home opening series against Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12.
