SECAUCUS, N.J. – Christopher Bec became the second UMaine baseball student-athlete drafted on the day, when the Toronto Blue Jays took the catcher in the fifth round (146
th overall) of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Bec, a native of Miami, Fla., led the Black Bears in batting average (.315), along with ranking second on the team in slugging percentage (.539) and third in hits (56). He was a unanimous selection to the America East All-Conference First Team, and also earned NEIBA Division I All-New England honors after the impressive season.
Starting in 45 games as a senior, Bec recorded multiple hits in a 14 games, including two five-hit performances. In one of those games, he blasted three home runs in a 24-5 win over UMass on May 2.
During the preseason, Bec was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, which is given annually to the top Division I catcher in collegiate baseball.
He joins
Jeremy Pena as Black Bear draftees on Tuesday. Pena was selected in the third round (102
nd overall) by the Houston Astros.
