Women's Hoops Continues League Play Sunday at Stony Brook

Black Bears looking for ninth straight win

Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team, currently with the nation's 17th longest active win streak, goes for its ninth straight win on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Stony Brook. The Black Bears (17-8. 10-2), who defeated Stony Brook 64-56 earlier this season, look for their third consecutive win against the Seawolves (14-11, 6-6).

A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears are coming off a dominant victory over the America East preseason favorite New Hampshire. Maine handed the Wildcats a 77-46 defeat, marking the Black Bears second 30+ point victory in league play (UMBC, 69-36). The win, which propelled the Black Bears into sole possession of first place in the league, marked Maine's eighth straight win, moving it to 9-2 at home. Tanesha Sutton collected her fourth double-double (12 pts/11 rbs) in the win and was joined in double-digits by Julie Brosseau (19), Blanca Millan (16) and Fanny Wadling (15). Maine moved to 13-1 overall and 8-0 in league play when outrebounding its opponents after a 40-29 advantage over UNH on the boards. Defensively, Maine held its 10th opponent of the season under 50 points.

Millan, who has posted double-digit scoring performance in each of her last 24 games, checks in fourth among league leaders at 17.8 points per game and ranks fourth with a 36.1 percent mark from 3-point range and fifth in three-point field goals per game (2.1). In league action, Millan, the reigning America East Player of the Week, ranks second in the league at 18.7 points per game with 5.8 rebounds and an impressive 3.2 steals. Her 178 total field goals place her 25th in the nation while she is the 54th highest point scorer (444) in the NCAA this season. Defensively, Millan ranks 12th in the nation with 76 steals and 15th at 3.0 steals per game, both tops among America East leaders. Over her last five outings, Millan is averaging 19.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.3 steals. Julie Brosseau is adding 12.3 points, including double-digits in each of her last three outings and five 3-pointers in each of her last two. Brosseau ranks second in the league with 2.6 three-point field goals per game against league opponents and second in overall three-point field goal percentage (37.2). Tanesha Sutton, coming off her fifth career double-double, is adding 10.8 points and ranks fourth in the league in rebounding (7.0), sixth in steals (2.1) and sixth in assists (3.1). Dor Saar, who was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, has posted double-figures in five of her last nine games and ranks 10th in the league at 2.6 assists per game.

Maine's defense now ranks 10th in the nation, allowing just 54.9 points per game. In league play, the Black Bears have held America East foes to just 51.0 points per game while forcing 17.0 turnovers. The Black Bears, who totaled their second-highest assists total (25) of the season in their game against UNH, rank second in the league at 15.1 assists per game. Maine, averaging 64.5 points per game, rank 28th nationally with 202 three-point field goals, 22nd in three-point attempts (606), 47th in three-point makes per game (8.1) while shooting 33.3 percent from downtown, all America East highs.

SCOUTING STONY BROOK:
The Seawolves enter action winners of three of their last four America East contests after most recently defeating UMass Lowell, 63-60. Stony Brook's defense ranks second in the league, allowing 57.6 points per game. The Seawolves feature one of the top 3-point defenses in the nation, ranking sixth among NCAA leaders holding their opponents to a 26.1 percent mark from beyond the arc. Shania Johnson leads the way for Stony Brook as she ranks fifth in the league in scoring (15.6), second in assists (5.4) and 21st nationally with 3.1 three-point field goals per game. Cheyenne Clark ranks second in the league at 9.2 rebounds per game while Jerell Matthews is adding 14.5 points with a 44.5% mark from the floor. Stony Brook, averaging 63.1 points per game, have struggled taking care of the ball as they check in sixth in the league with 17.6 turnovers per game. Stony Brook is second in the league in rebounding (38.0).

A GLIMPSE INTO THE STONY BROOK SERIES:
Maine and Stony Brook have been quite evenly matched over their 17 year competition history. Dating back to the first meeting between the two teams in 2001, Maine holds a slim 20-18 advantage in the all-time series. Maine has won two-straight in the series, including a 64-56 victory in its league opener back on Jan. 3. Millan (20) and Brosseau (19) led the way in the most recent victory. Maine has won seven of the last eight meetings. The Black Bears are 6-11 on the road all-time against Stony Brook. The teams have split each of the last seven meetings played at Stony Brook.

DURING THE STREAK:
The Black Bears enter today riding an eight-game win streak; their longest streak of the season and the 16th longest active streak in the NCAA. During the streak, Maine has held five of its eight opponents under 50 points and are allowing just 46.5 points per game over the stretch. The Black Bears limited UMBC to just 36 points as part of the win streak, the lowest point total scored against the Black Bears since 2005 (Rider - 35 points). Defensively, Maine has forced 134 combined turnovers (16.8). Maine has got off to hot starts during the winning streak, outscoring oppoents 132-70 in the first quarter over the last eight outings. The Black Bears are averaging 8.6 three-point field goals per game during the run.

STEALING THE SHOW:
Millan, who has tallied four or more steals in four of her last five games, has featured three or more takeaways in 16 games this season. Millan has at least one steal in each of her last 31 outings and currently ranks 12th in the nation with 76 steals and 15th nationally with 3.0 per game.

LEADING THE LEAGUE IN DEFENSE - 54.9 PPG:
Maine, which is allowing just 51.0 points per game in America East action, continues to climb up the national scoring defense charts. The Black Bears, who lead the America East in scoring defense, currently check in 10th nationally, out of 349 teams, as they are allowing just 54.9 points per game. Maine has held 17 opponents to 60 points or fewer this season.
