PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In its final test before the America East Championships, the Maine women's swimming and diving team defeated Providence 161.5 to 133.5 on Saturday afternoon at Taylor Natatorium.
Maine won both relays on the day, with Maine's 'A' team of
Megan McGillivray,
Sabrina Nuttall,
Rita Chen and
Emily Borger took first in the 200m medley relay, earning Maine 11 points with a time of 2:02.11. The Black Bears 'B' squad of
Emma Blair,
Ines Khiyara,
Victoria Kingston and
Juliana McDonald were the runner-ups with a time of 2:03.67.
In the 200m freestyle relay, Borger, Blair, Chen, and McDonald won with a time of 1:49.95 to add 11 more points to Maine's score.
Lynsie Russell put together a solid day with first place finishes in the 100m backstroke (1:06.46), and 200m individual medley (2:28.39) The freshman also earned runner-up in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:06.64. In total, Russell earned 24 points towards Maine's team score.
Along with being the second leg of Maine's first place 200m medley relay team, Nuttall earned two victories in 100m breaststroke (1:16.53), and the 200m breaststroke (2:45.86). Khiyara took second place behind Nuttall in the 100m breaststroke (1:18.65), while
Caroline Strolic was the runner-up in the 200m breaststroke behind Nuttall.
McDonald won the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:00.60. Blair followed in second place with a time of 1:00.77. Blair also won the 50m freestyle (27.43) on the day.
Shayla Rose Kleisigner led a group of Black Bears in the 800m freestyle, with a time of 9:29.48. She also finished second in the 400m with a time of 4:37.26.
Other top performers include a runner up swim in the 200m by Kingston (2:26.63), and a second place nod by Chen in the 200m backstroke (2:27.29).
The Black Bears' score 161.5 points marks the most since Maine scored 172 in the season-opener against URI
Both the women and men's swimming and diving teams are back in action the weekend of Feb. 15, when the Black Bears head to Worcester Polytechnic Institute to compete in the America East Championships.
