The Black Bears look to start off the week strong after going 2-3 last week, 0-3 in conference on the weekend, as they begin the week with a non-conference matchup with the UMPI Owls, Tuesday night at 5pm at Mahaney Diamond.
Last Time Out
After getting swept in the double header at Binghamton on Saturday, the Black Bears held the Bearcats to just three runs on Sunday, but couldn't manage the final tying run after tying the game twice. Jonah Normandeau went 7.0 innings for Maine, allowing eight hits and two earned runs, walking one and striking out four, the loss brings his record to 1-4. Cody Pasic hit his second homerun of the weekend and of the series, and of the season, to tie the game in the top of the third.
Maine So Far
Maine comes into this series with an overall record of 14-20, going 8-5 so far in the month of April. They are led by Junior Catcher Chris Bec, who has a team-high .368 batting average and 46 hits. Sohpomore shortstop Jeremy Pena has been swinging the bat well as of late, as he now leads the team in RBIs with 19, chipping in with a .266 batting average. Senior right-fielder Tyler Schwanz has hit three home runs this season, he chips in with a .252 on the season. Junior Catcher/DH Jonathan Bennett has made his presence known in his first year in the America East, as he leads the team in conference batting average at .323 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Scouting the Owls
UMPI comes into this matchup after losing two to Eastern Nazarene on the 15th, 7-0 and 9-4; the Owls were scheduled to play this past weekend, hosting Central Maine Community College, but a snow storm canceled the four-game series. The Owls are led by Junior Outfielder/Pitcher Matt Curry who has a team-high in hits with 26 and RBIs with 19, while Sophomore infielder Ryan Sanderson leads the team with a .333 batting average.
