BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Maine women's swimming and diving team dropped its' America East Conference opening dual meet to Vermont by a score of 169-111 on Saturday afternoon at Forbush Natatorium. The Black Bears took wins in the 100-yd butterfly and the 200-yd freestyle relay to highlight the meet.
The meet started with the 200-yd medley relay, as Maine placed second, fourth, and sixth. The runner-up Black Bear relay team of
Megan McGillivray,
Sabrina Nuttall,
Victoria Kingston, and
Emma Blair finished with a time of 148.81.
The second event featured the 1000-yd freestyle, as the Catamounts earned the top-three spots before Emily Lund finished with a time of 10:51.39 as the top Maine finisher. Next up was the 200-yd freestyle, as
Chloe Adams recorded a Maine-best time of 1:59.12, good enough for fourth place. Event four was the 100-yd backstroke, as McGillivray finished as the runner-up, finishing with a time of 1:00.41.
Nuttall placed third in the 100-yd breaststroke, with a time of 1:07.62, while
Lynsie Russell earned second place with a time of 2:12.09 in the 200-yd fly. In the following event, the 50-yd freestyle,
Emma Blair narrowly finished behind the first-place Catamount swimmer, with a time of 24.85.
Juliana McDonald took fourth place in the same event with a time of 24.95, while
Emily Borger took fifth with a time of 25.06.
In the 1-meter dive,
Emily Neville scored a total of 123.30 as the one Black Bear participant to mark the halfway point in the meet. Neville earned a score of 129.00 in the 3-meter dive later on in the meet. Blair, McDonald, and Borger took the top three Maine times in the 100-yd freestyle, taking fourth, fifth, and sixth place, respectively following the diving event.
Russell placed second in the 200-yd backstroke for her second runner-up performance, swimming a season-best time of 2:08.21. In the 200-yd breaststroke, Maine placed fourth through seventh among the 12 competitors, with
Emma Blackdeer,
Ines Khiyara, Nuttall, and
Frances Dent placing in those spots.
Event 12 was the 500-yd freestyle, as Lund took third, registering a time of 5:18.07. Kingston was the first individual to win an event for Maine, as the senior took first in the 100-yd butterfly with a time of 59.17 in the 13
th event of the afternoon.
Following the 200-yd individual medley, Maine won the final event of the afternoon in the 200-yd freestyle relay, as Borger, Blair,
Rita Chen, and McDonald topped the competition with a time of 1:38.02.
Both the women's and men's swimming and diving teams will be idle until November 17, when the Black Bears travel to Kingston, R.I. to compete at the Harold Anderson Invitational. The invitational will take place at the Tootell Aquatic Center, on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.
