CALGARY, Alberta — Former University of Maine men's ice hockey player Teddy Purcell is among the 25 players selected to represent Team Canada at the upcoming Channel One Cup, which will take place Dec. 13-17 in Moscow, Russia.
Canada's National Men's Team staff will use the Channel One Cup as part of the ongoing evaluation leading up to the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Earlier this fall, Purcell was a member of the 26-player roster for the Karjala Cup -- one of the three tournaments the organization is using to evaluate the player pool. Hockey Canada is also slated to play in the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, Dec. 26-31, before naming the final Olympic roster.
Purcell played 40 games for the Black Bears during the 2006-07 season, putting up 43 points on 16 goals and a team-high 27 assists for a squad that reached the Frozen Four. The St. John's Newfoundland native skated for Canada at the 2012 IIHF World Championships, notching one goal and one assist in the tournament.
