ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women's swimming and diving team defeated the University of Rhode Island by a score of 172-124 on Saturday morning at Stanley M. Wallace Pool. The men's team also competed on Saturday.
The women's team won of 10 of the 16 events on the day against the Rams.
Shayla Rose Kleisinger and
Emma Blair both won two individual events each to pace Maine over Rhode Island. Blair was also a part of the 200-yd freestyle relay that placed first. Both Blair and Kleisinger earned swimmers of the meet honors for their performances.
Maine started the meet strong, placing the top-two teams in the women's 200 medley relay, as the group of
Megan McGillivray,
Sabrina Nuttall,
Victoria Kingston, and
Juliana McDonald took first with a time of 1:48.86.
Kleisinger took her first win of the day in the 1000-yd freestyle, finishing three seconds ahead of the second-place Ram with a time of 10:40.11.
Chloe Adams followed with a victory in the 200-yd freestyle, finishing the time of 1:58.62 as Maine won the first three events. The Rams took first place finishes in the 100-yd backstroke, 100-yd breaststroke, and the 200-yd butterfly, before the Blair won her first event of the meet in the 50-yd freestyle with a time of 24.57.
Blair ensued to twin the 100-yd freestyle, hitting the touchpad in a time of 53.99.
Lynsie Russell defeated the competition in the 200-yd backstroke to give Maine another win. She finished with a time of 2:08.84.
Kleisinger won her second event in the 500-yd freestyle, with a time of 5:14.37. Kingston followed with a win in the 100-yd butterfly, finishing in just under a minute with a time of 59.04.
Caroline Strolic would win the 200-yd individual medley with a time of 2:13.60, while Kleisinger finished in second with just under a second.
The Black Bears capped the meet with a win in the 200-yd. freestyle relay, as the team of
Emily Borger, Blair,
Rita Chen, and
Juliana McDonald completed the event in 1:39.14.
For the men, Freshmen
Jacob Ketch and
Jack McNamara garnered swimmer of the meet honors.
The Black Bears will host Dartmouth next Saturday, October 28 in the final home meet of the 2017-18 season. The meet is set to start at 11:00 a.m. at Stanley Wallace Pool.
