Box Score CORAL GABLES, FL. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 76-51 decision to No. 11 Miami in the Holiday Tournament Championship on Tuesday evening.
Tanesha Sutton led the Black Bears with 13 points, her third-straight game totaling double-digits.
Sutton earned Holiday Classic All-Tournament team honors after she averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists over the two games.
Julie Brosseau also tallied double-figures, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to finish with 10 points. Brosseau is now tied with
Sigi Koizar for the team lead in makes from beyond the arc, each totaling 21. Brosseau's two 3-pointers were half of Maine's makes from downtown as the Black Bears struggled, going 4-for-22 from 3-point range. Overall from the field, Maine finished 17-for-49 (34.7%).
Miami controlled the boards with a 40-23 margin and outscored the Black Bears 40-14 in the paint. Adrienne Motley led the Hurricanes with 21 points, going 8-for-9 from the field, as Miami shot 51.7% as a team.
Maine jumped out to an early three point edge but Miami netted eight unanswered points as part of a 13-2 run, giving the Hurricanes a 10-point lead midway through the first quarter.
Trailing by 11, Maine pieced together a 6-0 run to cut the lead to five. Back-to-back buckets from Brosseau started the sprint before a jumper from
Laia Sole chipped the lead to 19-14.
The Hurricanes continued to convert on offense, eventually stretching their lead out to 14 after a jumper from Motley with 3:33 left in the half.
Maine continued its fight with makes by Sutton and Sole cutting the lead to 11. Miami took its largest lead of the half at 16 with 8-seconds remaining before a halfcourt shot at the buzzer from Koizar sent Maine into the half trailing by 13, 41-28.
The Hurricane's lead grew to 18 with 3:36 left in the third before Maine again began charging back. Four-straight point from Sutton came as the start of a 6-0 run, cutting the Miami lead back down to 12.
However it would be as close as Maine could get as Miami outscored the Black Bears 22-10 in the fourth quarter to secure a 76-51 victory in the Holiday Tournament Championship.
The Black Bears are off for the Holidays before returning to action on Dec. 28 when they travel to Tulane. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
