Maine men's ice hockey opens Hockey East play against no. 5 ranked Boston College Eagles. Game one of the series is at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine with a 7:00 p.m. start time. The Black Bears return to Orono on November 5 to complete the series with a 7:30 puck drop against the Eagles.
Maine comes into the Cross Insurance Arena at 3-3-2 after a tough road trip to Colgate saw the Black Bears tie 2-2 and then lose 5-3 to the Raiders. The Black Bears however reopen their home slate, first with a trip to Alfond South in Portland before returning home to the friendly confines of Alfond Arena Nov. 5. Maine has started off this season strong at home boasting a sweep of ECAC's RPI and then a series split with then no. 3 Quinnipiac.Â
All-Time Series
Boston College leads the all-time series with the Black Bears, 46-65-9. Maine dropped their last two meetings against the Eagles last season, 3-0 and 2-0. The last win for the Black Bears came on January 18, 2015 where Maine defeated BC, 4-2 at Alfond Arena.Â
Scouting The Black Bears
Maine is led by the 11-12-13 line consisting of freshmen new comers Chase Pearson (DET), Mitchell Fossier, and verteran junior Nolan Vesey (TOR). So far the trio has combined for 13 goals, 8 assists and 21 points through the Black Bears first 8 contests. Senior Captains Blaine and Eric Schurhammer round out the top 5 scorers on Maine's roster each having 5 points through their first 8 contests.Â
Rob McGovern has paced the Black Bears between the pipes this season starting 7 of the first 8 games for the boys in blue. Thus far this season, the sophomore from Weymouth, Massachusetts has compiled a 3-2-2 record with a .927 save percentage to go along with his 2.57 GAA. Night two at Colgate saw the first start of the season for Redshirt Senior Matt Morris. He made 37 stops on 41 shots against in a 5-3 loss to the Raiders. Â
Scouting The Eagles
Boston College was sought to be a team in the midst of rebuild after losing their high-flying junior class to professional hockey. Boston College has sure rebuilt in a timely fashion, as they carry a 6-2-1 record on their way to Maine. The Eagles average 3.89 goals per game. Boston Collge currently leads the nation in total goals scored with 35, and are lead by sophomore Colin White with 5 (OTT). Senior forward Matthew Gaudreau currently paces the team with 8 points through nine games. BC has proven to have depth in scoring with 11 players having over 5 points through their first 9 contests.Â
The goaltending duo for the Eagles has proven to be something special as both freshmen have carried a significant load for BC. 6'4" freshman Joe Woll boasts a 4-2-1 record with a 2.13 goals against average to go along with a .931 save percentage. Fellow freshmen Ryan Edquist is 2-0-0 with a 2.51 GAA coupled with a .881 save percentage.Â
