Box Score Hamilton, N.Y. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision in its series finale at Colgate on Saturday evening.
Ryan Smith tallied two points for the Black Bears with a goal and an assist.
In his first outing of the year,
Matt Morris made 37 saves in net for the Black Bears.
Maine fell behind 2-0 early in the first. The Raiders first got on the board on Hunter Racine's unassisted tally before Adam Dauda added a power play goal just under four minutes later.
The Black Bears cut the lead in half on Smith's unassisted, short-handed goal 11:22 into the first period.
Colgate responded, regaining a two-goal edge nearing the end of the first period when Andrew Black found the back of the net off assists from Racine and Mike Panowyk.
After a scoreless second period, Maine knotted the score in the third.
Blaine Byron brought the Black Bears back within a goal with his third score of the season. Three-minutes later,
Chase Pearson tied the game off an assist from Smith, 5:53 into the third.
Colgate reclaimed a one goal lead on Willie Brooks' power play goal with 3:54 remaining in regulation. The Black Bears pulled Morris for the extra skater but the Raiders were able to put the game away on Jake Kulevich's empty-netter with 29-seconds to play.
Maine starts Hockey East play on Friday, Nov. 4 when it meets Boston College at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine.
