CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. --- The third-ranked University of Maine men's ice hockey team suffered just its second loss of the season when it fell to Boston College 4-0 on Friday night at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Maine falls to 6-2-3 on the season and 4-1-1 in Hockey East play. Boston College improves to 7-4-0 overall and 5-3-0 in league play.
Early in the first period, BC was whistled for a minor penalty, while Maine took a five-minute major for boarding. The Black Bears were able to kill off the Eagle power play. During the penalty kill, Maine junior Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) had a breakaway. He was stopped on the breakaway, but was interfered with in the process and a penalty shot was called. BU netminder John Must was able to stop Nyquist on the penalty shot and the game remained scoreless mid way through the first period.
Boston College got on the scoreboard first with a five-on-three goal at 14:46. Eagle junior Paul Carey beat Maine goalie Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) with a shot just outside the crease. Brian Gibbons and Joe Whitney each assisted on the goal which gave Boston College the early 1-0 lead.
Brian Gibbons then scored a short-handed goal at 18:58 to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. It was the first time this season that the Black Bears had allowed two goals in the opening frame. BC had an 8-6 edge in shots on goal in the first.
Boston College extended its lead to 3-0 at 7:34 of the second period. Sullivan got a piece of Tommy Atkinson's shot, but not enough to keep it from trickling across the goal line. Patrick Brown and Brian Dumoulin each registered an assist on the goal.
The two teams were tied 17 shots a piece after two periods of play. Boston College made it a 4-0 game when Pat Mullane rifled a shot past Sullivan on the power play at 7:13.
Maine goalie Dan Sullivan played the first 47:13. He made 14 saves and falls to 4-2-1 on the season. Shawn Sirman (Blezard Valley, Ontario) played the final 12:47 of the game, stopping all six shots that he faced.
John Muse stopped all 32 shots that he saw in goal for the Eagles. He improves to 6-2-0 on the season.
Maine finished the game with a 32-24 edge in shots on goal, including a 15-7 advantage in the third period. The Black Bears were 0-for-7 on the power play, while BC was 2-for-4.
