
Abbott Notches Overtime Game-Winner

BURLINGTON, Vt. --- Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) scored on a breakaway in overtime as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated Vermont 3-2 on Saturday night. The Black Bears improve to 4-1-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in Hockey East play. The Catamounts move to 0-2-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in conference play. Abbott also had an assist earlier in the game for the Black Bears.
Maine took a 1-0 lead at 6:26 of the second period when Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta) beat Vermont goalie Rob Madore with a shot that he put just under the crossbar. For House, it was his fifth goal of the season. Robby Dee (Plymouth, Minn.) tipped the puck to Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) along the boards. Nyquist carried the puck to the front of the net before passing to House.
Vermont tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal at 15:46 of the second period. Wahsontiio Stacey got the equalizer for the Catamounts.
Robby Dee gave Maine the lead back with just .8 seconds remaining in the second period. Dee won the faceoff to Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) who had a shot. The shot was blocked to Nyquist who got it back to Dee for the goal.
After Maine was whistled for a pair of penalties with 7:17 remaining in the game, the Catamounts tied the game at 2-2 with a power play goal by Jack Downing. Drew MacKenzie and Nick Bruneteau both picked up assists on the goal.
Abbott notched the game-winner 2:16 into overtime to send the Black Bears home with the victory. Josh Van Dyk (Woodstock, Ontario) and Nyquist each assisted on the game-winner.
Maine goalie Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) made 23 saves in the game. He improves to 2-1-0 on the season. Rob Madore stopped 39 shots for the Catamounts. He falls to 0-2-2.
Maine held a 42-25 edge in shots on goal in the game. The Black Bears were 2-for-5 on the power, while Vermont was 2-for-8.
The Black Bears continue Hockey East Conference play next weekend when they travel to Boston University to face the Terriers on Saturday, Nov. 6. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM.
