Adrianna Smith has been named the America East Player of the Year as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon. She becomes the 11
th America East Women's Basketball student-athlete, and sixth from Maine, to earn Player of the Year honors twice in a career.
Smith's Player of the Year honor highlights a list of accolades collected by three Black Bears. In addition to her Player of the Year honor, Smith was named to the America East all-conference first team, the all-defensive team, and the all-academic squad.
Asta Blauenfeldt earned her first career all-conference honor with a selection to the league's third team while
Lala Woods rounded out the award winners with a spot on the all-rookie team.
Smith is the conference leader in scoring (22.2), rebounding (10.3), and assists per game (4.8) and is currently the only student-athlete in the country who is averaging 20.0+ points, 10.0+ rebounds, and 4.0+ assists. At the conclusion of the regular season, Smith ranked 12
th in the country with 17 double-doubles with her 55-career double-doubles ranking as the most in the America East since 1994. Smith, who registered double-digit scoring in 28 of Maine's 29 games, recorded 20 or more points 19 times including reaching 30 or more points four times. On Nov. 29, Smith registered a triple-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists against Saint Francis. Recently, Smith recorded her 1,000
th career rebound to become the first America East student-athlete, male or female, to record 1,000+ points, 1,000+ rebounds, and 400+ assists. Smith also ranked inside the top-10 of America East leaders in both steals (4
th – 1.7) and blocks (8
th-0.8).
Additionally, Smith compiled a 3.79 undergraduate grade point average as a kinesiology & physical education (exercise science) major with a food science major, and currently maintains a 3.93 GPA in pursuit of her Master's in business administration.
Blauenfeldt finished the regular season with a career-high 11.7 points and a career-best 58 made three-pointers. The senior guard ranked third in the conference in three-point percentage (37.7) and sixth in triples made per game (2.0). Blauenfeldt concluded the regular season with 19 double-figure scoring performances and posted five performances of four or more made triples including a career-high six against UMass Lowell on a career-high 26-point night.
Woods, who started the final 14 games of the 18 she appeared in this season, averaged 8.7 points with a 30.2 percent clip from downtown while hitting 17-of-18 free throws. The freshman guard concluded the regular season on a three-game double-figure scoring streak including a career-high 18 point showing with four triples in Maine's regular season finale victory over Binghamton. In total, Woods posted five double-digit scoring performances and hit two or more triples in eight of her 18 outings.
Smith, Blauenfeldt, and Woods begin postseason play when they host New Hampshire in America East quarterfinal action on March 5 at 6 p.m.
