Black Bears lock up two-seed with win over Binghamton

Maine will host an America East quarterfinal game on March 5

ORONO, Maine -- Adrianna Smith posted her 55th career double-double as the University of Maine women's basketball team concluded the regular season with a 74-67 win over Binghamton on Senior Day. The win secured the number two seed for the Black Bears in the upcoming America East playoffs.

The Black Bears will open their postseason run on March 5 when they host the No. 7 seed at Skip Chappelle Court at 6 p.m. Tickets are available now and can be purchased at GoBlackBears.com/Tickets, by phone at 207-581-BEAR, or in-person at the Alfond Arena ticket office.

Smith finished the day with 21 points and 17 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season and seventh in as many games. Smith also registered her 1,000th career rebound in the win to become the first student-athlete, male or female, in America East history to record 1,000+ points, 1,000+ rebounds, and 400+ assists in a career.

Sarah Talon posted 18 points and seven rebounds on her senior day while Lala Woods also added 18, a new career-high, with four triples.

Maine, which hit 10-of-14 shots in the opening quarter, finished the day 27-of-54 (50.0) with eight triples while going 12-of-16 from the free throw stripe.

The Black Bears, who led by as many as 23 in the first half, outscored Binghamton 25-12 in the opening quarter.

Leading by four late in the first quarter, buckets from Smith and Asta Blauenfeldt opened a 19-0 run for the Black Bears. During the sprint, which saw Maine keep Binghamton scoreless for 7:24 of game action, the Black Bears were able to build a 35-12 advantage with the last eight points of the run all coming from Smith.

Maine entered the half with a 43-25 cushion.

Binghamton slowly chipped away in the third, cutting the deficit down to nine with 2:59 left in the quarter.

The Black Bears would go on a 6-2 run, with two triples from Woods, to close the third and take a 56-43 lead into the fourth.

Blauenfeldt's triple with 4:32 to play elevated Maine's lead back to 14 before Binghamton again responded, this time with a 14-4 run, to cut the lead to four with 29-seconds remaining.

However, it would be as close as the Bearcats would get as Maine sealed its 12th conference victory by a final of 74-67.
