Preview: Maine opens Hockey East play at Providence College

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team (2-5-0, 0-0-0- HE) will begin conference play on Oct. 31/Nov. 1 against Providence College at Schneider Arena. Game times are set for 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM, respectively.

BLACK BEARS' LAST TIME OUT:

  • This past weekend was an off weekend for the Black Bears. 
  • Most recently, Maine split with #8 Colgate, after earning their first upset of the year win a 2-1 win Saturday, Oct 18.
  • On Friday, Oct 17, Maine lost 5-2.
  • Kiia Lahtinen backstopped Maine both nights, making 75 saves on 80 shots faced. She earned Hockey East Goaltender of the Week for her performance. 
  • Rookie Lulu Rucinski put up two points, including her first goal against Colgate to earn her Hockey East Defender of the Week.
  • Lily Fetch scored the game-winner on Saturday, her fourth career game-winning goal and the 12th of her career.

MAINE BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Kiia Lahtinen is fourth the nation in saves with 260. Over the 260 shots faced, Lahtinen holds a .922 save %
  • Maine is fourth in the nation on the Penalty Kill with a 95.5%.

MORE ON MAINE:

  • Raegan Wurm's goal in Saturday's win was her eighth of her career.
  • Lahtinen picked up her second ranked win of her career.

PREVIOUS MATCHUPS WITH PROVIDENCE:    

  • The Friars hold a 54-17-14 all-time record against Maine. Last season, Providence won two of three meetings, with both wins coming in overtime. 
  • Maine's last win at Schneider Arena came in October 2023. 

SCOUTING THE FRIARS:

  • Providence enters the weekend after splitting last weekend's series against No. 13/13 University of St. Thomas. On Friday, the Friars earned a 7-6 overtime victory behind senior Reichen Kirchmair's four goals, including the game-winner. Junior Audrey Knapp recorded four points on three assists and one goal. 
  • In the rematch on Saturday, Oct. 25, Providence was defeated by the Tommies, 5-1. 
  • Graduate student, goaltender Hope Walinski has started in all 8 games for the Friars.
  • The Friars are receiving votes in both the USCHO and USA Hockey Polls.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Maine continues Hockey East play at home on Nov 7/8 against Boston University. Game times are 3/3:30pm. Following Saturday's game, Maine will host the annual Skate with the Bears event for fans.
