ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to visiting UMass Lowell on Friday afternoon at the Maine Field Hockey Complex.
Maine controlled much of the play, holding a 16-11 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners including three in the game's 1:25 of action.
Alice Van Hemelen's goal with 2:47 remaining proved to be the difference.
The River Hawks opened the scoring on Karli Penrod's goal off an assist from Madison Leeper at 6:52 of the first quarter.
Working off a corner, Maine tied the score at 22:57. After the insert,
Nicole Kowalewski blasted a shot which found the stick of
Zoe Furber who was able to tip it past the keeper for Maine's first goal. For Furber, it was her team-leading eight goal of the season.
Maine took the lead in the 46' when Furber scooted a pass to
Saylor Kuefler who lifted it up and over the goalkeeper to put Maine on top, 2-1.
Penrod evened the score just under two minutes later with her second of the game before Van Hemelen scored the eventual game-winner in the 57'.
The Black Bears return to action on Sunday when they travel to take on Holy Cross at noon.
