WATCH: Path to Progress at Shawn Walsh Hockey Center & Alfond Arena

ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine Director of Athletics Jude Killy provides an update on the progress of construction at the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center & Alfond Arena.

Construction to the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and Alfond Arena began shortly after completion of both program's seasons in April. The early stages of work included separating the ground level and lower level utilities at the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center to ensure occupancy to the locker rooms, weight room and sport medicine areas for the upcoming hockey season.

Over the summer, heavy excavation and foundation work took place for the new additions to the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and Alfond Arena. Structural work has begun inside the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and will continue through the fall months.

In the early stages of September, rough plumbing has been installed for the new locker rooms and sports medicine area while prepping for the steel installation is underway. The steel structures will begin developing and framing out the new area midway through September and continue through October.

The project is made possible by a transformational $320 million commitment from the Harold Alfond Foundation to the University of Maine System, which includes a $170 million investment in UMaine Athletics to fund the Athletics Facilities Master Plan as part of UMS TRANSFORMS.
