Orono, ME - The University of Maine baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with NJIT on Sunday afternoon.
First Pitch: Game One - 12:05 P.M. (8-0 Black Bears)
Second Inning: Maine brought home the opening run of the contest as Jake Marquez (1B) scored on a fielder's choice and error by the NJIT shortstop.
Fourth Inning: The Black Bears tacked on their second run of the opening game on the day with an RBI double from Myles Sargent. Zach Martin (1B) scored on the play.
Fifth Inning: Martin brought home a run as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Will Burns (1B). Sargent was hit by a pitch two batters later, scoring Jeremiah Jenkins (E4).
Maine broke the first game of the afternoon wide open as Dean O'Neill hit a grand slam to left field, scoring Nick White (BB), Martin (HBP) and Sargent (HBP).
Seventh Inning: Gabe Gifford took over in the final frame for Gianni Gambardella. Gambardella was nearly untouchable as he allowed no runs on 1 hit, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts across 6 innings of work.
Gifford picked up 1 strikeout, walked 1 batter and threw a wild pitch before he was relieved in the seventh inning by Marshall Smaracko.
Smaracko recorded the final two outs of the contest, allowing just 1 walk in his â…” of an inning of work.
Gambardella picked up his second win of the season on the mound for Maine.

First Inning: NJIT plated the opening two runs of the second game in the first inning.
Maine got one run back on a solo home run by Jenkins to center field, his 12th of the season.
Second Inning: Sargent put the Black Bears back in front as he hit his first home run of the season to left field. His two-run shot brought home Jake Marquez (BB) on the play.
Jack Friend added a third run on a single to right field, scoring Dean O'Neill (1B). Maine scored their fourth run of the frame on an error by the NJIT shortstop, scoring Friend (1B).
Fourth Inning: NJIT plated two on a two-run home run to left field.
Fifth Inning: Jason Krieger was called on to begin the fifth inning in relief of Luc Lavigueur. Lavigueur allowed 4 runs on 6 hits, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts across 4 innings of work.
Ninth Inning: NJIT plated two runs (one unearned) in the top of the ninth to win the game, 6-5.
Krieger allowed 2 runs (1 earned) across 5 innings of work. He allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 6.
Maine (7-19, 3-5 AE) will take on UConn their next time out on Wednesday, Apr. 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3 P.M.
