PREVIEW: Men's Hockey Finishes 'First Half' with Home Contest Against Canisius

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine men's ice hockey team will finish the 'first half' of the season with a non-conference contest against Canisius College. Game time for Saturday is scheduled for 2:05 pm.

About the Black Bears

• The Black Bears enter the 2022-23 season with 16 new faces on the roster after seeing 13 players graduate, transfer, or leave to pursue professional hockey.

• 12 letterwinners from the 2021-22 season return for this chapter of Maine hockey, which include the four newly minted captains. Jakub Sirota will sport the 'C', while Lynden Breen, Ben Poisson, and David Breazeale have each earned an 'A' on their sweater.

• 11 incoming freshmen and five transfers make up the players who were added by the coaching staff, whom are in their second full season behind the bench.

• Junior alternate captain Lynden Breen leads the Black Bears in points (11) and goals (six). Senior alternate captain forward Ben Poisson holds the team lead in assists (seven). Freshman defender Brandon Holt leads all newcomers in points (2 G, 4 A).

• Eight different Black Bears have scored two or more goals over the first 14 games (Breen, Holt, Villeneuve-Houle, Hanson, Trudeau, Poisson, Sirota, and Renwick), while 14 different players have dished out three or more assists.

About the Golden Griffns

• Canisiu finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 16-16-3, ultimately falling in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament to Mercyhurst.

• The Golden Griffins return two of their top five scorers from 2021-22 in Keaton Mastrodonato and Max Kouznetsov.

• Jacob Barczewski appeared in 29 games last season. The junior posted a 2.42 GAA and .923 save percentage, while winning 13 games and recording one shutout for the Golden Griffins.

The Series with Canisius

• Maine enters Friday's contest – the fourth meeting between the Black Bears and Golden Griffins – with a standing of 3-0-0 in the all-time series.

• The Black Bears and Golden Griffins first met during the 1999-00 season. Maine earned a 3-0 victory in the Alfond Arena.

• The teams last met during the 2014-15 season. The Black Bears won both contests in Orono by scores of 3-1 and 4-1, respectively.

• Current Edmonton Oiler, Devin Shore, scored a goal and dished out two assists during the last match-up between the two schools.
