- This contest marks the first-ever meeting between Maine and Merrimack, which competes in the Northeast Conference (NEC). Despite never matching-up with the Warriors, Maine is familiar with the NEC as it enters play 13-2 against members of the NEC. Maine is 7-1 all-time against Central Connecticut State, 5-1 against Bryant, and 1-0 against Sacred Heart; it's most recent NEC opponent. Maine has won three in a row against NEC member programs and nine-straight at home against the NEC.
- Maine's defense will look to slow down a Merrimack offense which enters play averaging 517.0 yards per game. The Black Bears' passing offense (220.0) will match-up against a Merrimack defense which is allowing 209.0 pass yards per game.
- The Black Bears are coming off a 55-7 loss at, then No. 3, James Madison. Derek Robertson, who stepped in at quarterback after started Joe Fagnano was knocked out of the game with an injury suffered in the first quarter, finished the contest 8-for-22 with 88 yards and a touchdown. Devin Young, who sat out the 2020 spring season, has returned to lead Maine in receptions in each of the first two games. Defensively, Fofie Bazzie led Maine with a career-high 10 tackles. Ray Miller (10.0) and Bazzie (9.0) rank first and third, respectively, in the CAA in tackles per game.
- Merrimack is off to its best start since 2005 as it has opened with a pair of wins after defeating Saint Anselm in its season-opener before going on the road to defeat No. 24 Holy Cross, 35-21, in week two. The Warriors are led by quarterback Westin Elliott who is averaging 330.0 yards per game through the air with seven touchdowns and an impressive 77.0 completion percentage through two games. A Maine Win Would...
...Be Maine's first win over Merrimack.
...Be Maine's 14th win over a Northeast Conference member.
...Be Maine's fourth-straight win over a Northeast Conference member.
...Be Maine's 10th straight home victory over an NEC opponent.
...Be Maine's first home win of 2021.
...Snap a two-game home losing streak.
