Fagnano and the offense strung together an impressive drive to start the third quarter, regaining the lead with four minutes into the third quarter. Facing a third and seven,
Shawn Bowman snatched a nine yard reception to move the chains. Three consecutive completions moved Maine to the Stony Brook 27 before Fagnano hit Miller at the goal line. Stony Brook looked to answer, crossing midfield and into Maine territory. However, the Black Hole would come up with a key turnover to end the threat when
Justin Sambu stripped Lawton.
Robby Riobe would fall on the loose ball as Maine's offense would take over at its own 35.
The turnover transitioned into points for the Black Bears as Maine marched 65 yards for another touchdown. Back-to-back 14-yard gains, one on a nifty run from Brock and another on a reception by Miller, moved Maine deep into Stony Brook territory. Three plays later, facing third and six, Fagnano stepped up in the pocket and hit Miller over the middle for the 20 yard score. Another Messina point after gave the Black Bears an eight point advantage, 21-13.
With 11:52 remaining in the fourth, Fields found Delante Hellams Jr. for a 29-yard Stony Brook touchdown. However, Rich Carr would come up with the pass breakup on the two-point conversion to keep Maine's lead at two, 21-19.
Maine would again have the answer, putting together perhaps its best drive of the contest in a clutch situation. On third and 12, Fagnano would rush ahead for two yards. However, a personal foul on Stony Brook would result in a first down for the Black Bears. Facing another third and 12, Fagnano hit Miller for a 12-yard gain to move the chains. Two plays later, Fagnano and Miller hooked up for the third time in the contest, this score a 12-yard connection, extending the lead to 28-19.
