Football takes opening night victory at Towson in CAA action

Towson, MD – The University of Maine football program took down Towson on the opening night of the college football season, 21-18.

The Black Bears broke through on the scoreboard first midway through the second quarter as Eddie Buehler connected with Malik McNeely for both of their first touchdowns as Black Bears, a 16-yard reception up the middle of the field.

Rashawn Marshall doubled the Black Bears lead later in the second quarter as he broke free for a 32-yard rushing touchdown up the left side of the field.

Nick Laughlin added onto the big second quarter for the Black Bears as he brought in a 30-yard reception up the middle of the field from Buehler for his first touchdown of the season and Buehler's second touchdown pass of the quarter.

Notes:

Chris Bacon picked up the first sack of the season for the Black Bears in the first quarter.
Maine stopped Towson on fourth down with a sack by Bryce Purnell and Derek Berlitz in the first quarter.
Brayden Isaiah brought in the first interception of the season for the Black Bears off of a heavily covered play by Sam Oppenheimer.
The Black Bears had six sacks on the night.
The game went into an hour and three minute delay due to weather/lightning in the fourth quarter with 13:20 to go in the game.
Towson missed a field goal left with 3:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Oppenheimer forced a fumble that was recovered by Jake Kucera with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter to ice the game.

Notable Stat Lines:

Buehler threw for 199 yards and a pair of scores on 63%.
Marshall took 12 carries for 81 yards and a score.
Jeremiah McGill had 10 tackles in his Black Bear debut.
Derek Berlitz and Bryce Purnell each had 1.5 sacks on the night.
Isaiah had a sack and an interception on the night.

Towson Scoring:
Towson scored a touchdown late in the second quarter and one in the third quarter. They hit a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Next Time Out:
The Black Bears travel to Appalachian St. on Saturday, Sept. 5 for their first game against an FBS opponent on the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
