Box Score EAST MEADOW, NY - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the 2021-22 season in a 4-2 victory over the Sharks of LIU.
The Sharks struck first in this matchup as Abby Latorella netted her first goal of the season at the 10 minute mark into the first period. Stella Scott (1) and Erin Hinch (1) picked up assists on the goal.
Maine would answer just 1:34 later into the period as
Maddie Giordano scored her second of the young season to tie the game back up at 1-1.
Celine Tedenby (1) picked up the lone assist.
Matilda as Bjur would give LIU the lead heading into the second period as she netted her first of the season with just 32 seconds remaining in the first.
Jorden Mattison would enter the game for the Black Bears in net to start the second period, where she would go on to stop all nine shots she faced in the second and third period combined.
Maine would end the game on a 3-0 scoring streak, starting off with
Ally Johnson's goal late into the second period. Her second of the season would come off of the shot by
Ella MacLean (2).
Elise Morphy (1) would also pick up an assist.
Taylor Leech would keep the scoring going for Maine as she scored her first of the season on the eventually game winning goal at 2:18 into the third period.
Ida Kuoppala (2) and
Morgan Trimper (1) picked up the assists.
The Black Bears would seal the game with a minute remaining as
Nicole Pateman netted a power play goal for her first of the season to give Maine the 4-2 victory.
Maddie Giordano (1) and
Celine Tedenby (2) would grab the assists.
For LIU, they will fall to 0-5 to start the season.
For the Black Bears, they picked up their first win of the young season.
Jorden Mattison, who came in for
Loryn Porter (6 saves) would pick up her first win of her collegiate career.
For Maine (1-3), they will be staying in New York to take on the Sharks for a second time on Saturday, Oct. 10. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 P.M.
