Winthrop completes weekend sweep of Maine

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The University of Maine baseball program dropped its third straight game to open the 2020 season, as the Winthrop University Eagles completed the weekend series sweep in convincing 13-4 fashion.

Maine's pitching put them in an insurmountable hole early on, as they gave up twelve runs over the second and third inning to effectively end this one early. Six straight innings of zeros for the Maine offense sealed the deal, as Winthrop walked away with the commanding nine-run victory.

  • Joe Bramanti was once again solid in the middle of the lineup, driving in a pair of runs while scoring another on a 1-3 day that included a double.
  • Colby Emmertz continues to do a fine job setting the table at the top of the Black Bears' order, as he went 1-2 with a pair of walks and a pair of runs scored. Emmertz went 5-10 on the weekend with three walks and four of Maine's nine runs.
  • In an inverse of the first two games of the season, while Maine's starter struggled, the bullpen threw up four innings of shutout baseball at the end of this one. Freshman Colton Carson and sophomore Jacob Small were particularly effective, combining for three shutout innings and giving up just one hit in the process.

The Black Bears head for the other Carolina next, as they'll take part in the Campbell University Invitational in Buies Creek, North Carolina, taking on Villanova, Purdue, and the hosting Camels between February 21st and 23rd.
