Men's Hockey Stumbles in Neutral Site Game with UConn

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the UConn Huskies, 3-2, on Wednesday in the Webster Bank Arena.

First Goal (Maine 1-0): Jakub Sirota scored his first of the year and the Black Bears first of the night with a wrist shot from the blue line. Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup had his shot saved by UConn's netminder. The rebound deflected to Ben Poisson, who found Sirota. The sophomore defenseman looked to swing the puck to Schmidt-Svejstrup, instead fired at the net. Sirota's power play shot found its way into the net to give Maine an early 1-0 lead.

Second Goal (Maine 2-0): As was the case with the first goal of the night, the Black Bears' were given a scoring opportunity after having a shot saved by Tomas Vomacka. Tralmaks corralled his rebound, found Mitchell Fossier. The captain saw Tim Doherty hanging out in front of the net. The senior from Portsmouth, Rhode Island, scored his squad's second of the evening while soaring through the air.

Third Goal (Maine 2-1): After a Black Bear successful PK, UConn scored a dirty goal with 1:04 left in the first period. Kale Howarth's shot was turned away by Jeremy Swayman. Following a scrum in front of the Anchorage, Alaska, native, Carter Turnbull was able to toss the puck into the net. The Huskies trailed by a tally after 20:00.

Fourth Goal (2-2): A turnover behind Swayman immediately turned into a Huskies' goal. The poor puck control turned into two quick passes and an Alexander Payusov goal. The Hockey East match-up was tied at two three minutes into the second period.

Fifth Goal (3-2 UConn): Vladislav Firstov gave the 'home team' a lead early in the third period. The UConn forward had a goal similar to Doherty's as he dove while shooting the puck.

The score would stand as the Huskies grabbed the valuable Hockey East points.

Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 23 saves for the Black Bears, while Tomas Vomacka tallied 37 for the Huskies.

Maine went 1-4 on the power play, as UConn was 0-1 on their man advantages.

The Black Bears blocked 10 shots as a team.

Next: Maine returns to the ice Friday, January 24th, at Boston College. Puck drop in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
