ORONO, Maine – Scott Hillman has been named a volunteer assistant coach on the University of Maine men's hockey staff, it was announced by head coach Red Gendron. Hillman joins the Black Bears after serving as a head coach for 10 years in professional hockey and playing eight years of professional hockey.
After playing hockey in college for the University of Windsor, leading the country in defensemen scoring, and earning First Team All-Canadian as Windsor's team captain, Hillman played professionally for the Toledo Storm of the ECHL, the Odessa Jackalopes of the Central Hockey League, EV Duisburg of Oberliga, and the El Paso Buzzards of the Western Professional Hockey League. He also played roller hockey for the Buffalo Wings of both Roller Hockey International and Major League Roller Hockey.
"We are extremely happy to welcome Scott as our volunteer assistant coach for the Black Bear Men's Hockey Program. His hockey experience is extensive as a professional player and professional coach. His experience and knowledge of the game are rivaled only by his passion for teaching and coaching" Gendron said.
After retiring from playing, Hillman became the head coach of the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League, winning both back-to-back regular season titles and league championships. He was named the first head coach of the Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League. After leaving the Mavericks, Hillman was named the first coach of the new Indy Fuel of the ECHL.
In his last stop before the University of Maine, he took the role as head coach for Norwegian GET-liga team Frisk Asker in Norway.
