Men's Hockey Drops First Game at #13/#14 Northeastern

BOSTON, Massachusetts -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the #13/#14 Northeastern Huskies, 5-2, on Friday night in historic Matthews Arena.

First Goal (#13/#14 Northeastern 1-0): During a Maine line change, Tyler Madden scored for the Huskies. Aidan McDonough started the attack by passing the puck to Grant Jozefek. Jozefek left the puck for Madden and let him do the rest. #13/#14 Northeastern led 1-0 only one minute into the Friday night contest.

Second Goal (#13/#14 Northeastern 2-0): Tyler Madden found the back once again for his squad. As was the case with the first goal, Madden and McDonough found themselves in a 2-on-1 breakaway. The teammates played tic tac toe until Madden scored his second of the evening.

Third Goal (#13/#14 Northeastern 2-1): The Black Bears got one back when Eduards Tralmaks smacked one home with 9:52 left in the first period. Mitchell Fossier had two shots saved, but the second save bounced to an open Tralmaks who narrowed the gap to one.

Fourth Goal (#13/#14 Northeastern 3-1): Zach Solow scored a power play goal just over five minutes into the second. After Jordan Harris' shot deflected off the crossbar, Solow redirected the puck out of the air and into the Maine net.

Fifth Goal (#13/#14 Northeastern 4-1): Tyler Madden scored his third goal of the night at 7:52 of the second period. The lamplighter came on another odd man rush.

Sixth Goal (#13/#14 Northeastern 4-2): On a two-on-one advantage of their own, the Black Bears narrowed the deficit to two goals. Started by Emil Westerlund with a pass ahead to Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup, the forward let Ben Poisson take a shot on the Huskies' goaltender. Poisson did not waste his opportunity and scored his second of the year.

Seventh Goal (#13/#14 Northeastern 5-2): After assisting on two earlier goals, McDonough scored a goal of his own. The goal came on the power play early in the third period.

Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 22 saves, while Craig Pantano tallied 22 for Northeastern.

Maine went 0-5 on the power play, as the Huskies were 2-5 on their man advantages.

The Black Bears blocked 12 shots as a team.

Next: The two Hockey East foes will do battle once again tomorrow, November 23. Puck drop for the series finale is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
