ORONO, Maine – The No. 18 University of Maine field hockey team fell behind in the first half, and could not recover as No. 20 Harvard earned a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex.

The loss was Maine's first of the season, as the historic 8-0 record to start the 2018 season matches a program best that was set in 1975.

Emily Hindle tallied the lone goal for Maine, firing in a rebound into the back of the net in the second half to make it a 2-1 contest in the 49^th minute. Maddie Earle scored the Crimson's first three goals, while Natalie Sicher tallied an empty net goal with less than two minutes to go.

Mia Borley tied a career-high in saves, registering four, as the loss was her first in nine career games. Harvard's Ellie Shahbo improves to 3-1 on the season after making a total of four saves.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

Harvard out-shot Maine 13-6, including 10-5 on shots on goal.
The Crimson also earned a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
The loss was Maine's first in 323 days, when the Black Bears fell to nationally-ranked Pacific, 2-1, in the America East playoffs last season.
Maine still leads the all-time series over Harvard by a mark of 6-3.
Maine enters America East play next weekend, but will still play one more non-conference game against another Ivy League foe in Dartmouth on Oct. 9.
The eight-game win streak was Maine's longest since the Black Bears won 11 in a row in the 2011 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

12:13 | Harvard got on the scoreboard after Mia Borley made two consecutive saves, but the third rebound went to Earle, who deposited a shot past the Maine defenders.
38:25 | On a Crimson penalty corner, Earle found the back of the net after gaining possession off a Maine defensive save.
49:44 | On a Maine penalty corner, Hindle prevailed in a scrum in front of the net, putting a shot high past the diving goalkeeper.
57:19 | Earle deflected a shot high and to the right for Harvard's third goal.
68:27 |With Borley pulled for an empty net, Sicher tracked down possession before shooting the ball at an angle which trickled into the net.

UP NEXT:

The Black Bears are back in action next Friday, traveling to rival New Hampshire at 3:00 p.m. to begin America East play. Maine finishes the weekend at home against No. 24 Albany. Sunday's game will have a 1:00 p.m. start.
