Maine moves to 1-0 in America East play
ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine field hockey team defeated UAlbany, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex.
The Black Bears improve to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in America East play with the victory, while UAlbany falls to 3-5 and 0-1 in conference action.
Maine opened the scoring just over six minutes into the contest. Following a Black Bear penalty corner, Martha Barratt found Taylor Stanford, who scored to give Maine an early 1-0 lead.
The Black Bears doubled their advantage in the second quarter when Eloise Penty converted a penalty stroke at the 20:03 mark to make it 2-0.
Maine added to its lead in the third quarter as Saylor Kuefler found the back of the cage at 39:13, giving the Black Bears a 3-0 advantage heading into the fourth.
UAlbany got on the board in the fourth quarter when Quinty Reumer scored off assists from Jette Kurz and Mara Kuskes at 49:41, but the Black Bears held the Great Danes scoreless the rest of the way to secure the 3-1 victory.
Annabel Halkes made five saves in goal for Maine. The Black Bears finished with nine shots, including five on goal, while UAlbany registered eight shots and six on goal.
Maine is back in action on Friday, Oct. 9 when the Black Bears host New Hampshire at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
