Maine went four for five in the shootout

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine field hockey team defeated Vermont, 2-1, in a shootout victory on Thursday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex.

Freshman goalkeeper Annabel Halkes recorded 10 saves in the victory, while Martha Barratt scored Maine's lone goal in regulation. Eloise Penty delivered the deciding shootout goal as the Black Bears outscored the Catamounts, 4-3, in the shootout.

Vermont outshot Maine 7-1 in the opening quarter, but Halkes made four saves to keep the contest scoreless. Barratt opened the scoring at the 17:09 mark off a penalty corner, with Saylor Kuefler and Penty picking up assists to give Maine a 1-0 halftime lead.

Vermont tied the contest at 36:23 scored off a penalty corner. Maine registered two shots in the quarter but could not regain the lead. Neither team found the back of the cage in the final quarter, with Halkes making one save to send the contest into overtime tied at 1-1. Halkes made three saves in overtime as Vermont outshot Maine 6-0, forcing a shootout.

Floor Dijkhuizen, Emily Chisholm and Taylor Stanford converted their shootout attempts before Halkes stopped Vermont's final attempt, setting up Penty's game-winning conversion to secure the 2-1 victory.
