ORONO, Maine – After defeating then No. 22 UAlbany on Sunday, the University of Maine field hockey team moved up one spot to No. 17 in the fourth edition of the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. The national-ranking matches the senior class's highest national-ranking, which also reached No. 17 during the 2015.
The Black Bears went 1-1 this past weekend, falling to New Hampshire 3-2 on Friday before bouncing back to down the Great Danes 2-1 in double overtime. The Black Bears now sit at 9-2 with a 1-1 America East record through 11 games this season.
The Black Bear offense continues to rank among the best in America, standing at third in the country in goals per game (4.27), fifth in points per game (10.82) and fifth in penalty corners per game (8.18). Defensively, the Black Bear defense has only allowed 1.42 goals per game, which is 16
th best in the nation.
Among America East squads in the poll, both No. 21 Stanford and No. 24 UAlbany follow the Black Bears. Maine is 3-1 against current teams in the poll this season, holding wins over current No. 23 Boston University, No. 25 Ohio State, along with the Great Danes. Maine's lone non-conference loss of the season came against current No. 11 Harvard.
Maine is off from game action until Sunday, Oct. 7, when the Black Bears venture to Vermont. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m at Moulton-Winder Field. The Black Bears return home on Tues. Oct. 9 for one last non-conference bout against Dartmouth at 1:00 p.m.
