Soccer Continues Homestand, Hosts Marist on Sunday

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine soccer team will look to go for its ninth-straight win over the Marist Red Foxes on Sunday in a noontime contest at Mahaney Diamond.

About the Black Bears
• Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, UMaine was nipped on Thursday afternoon by Bryant, 2-1.
• Sophomore Nicole Bailey finished a through-ball from senior Kendra Ridley to stake the Black Bears to the early edge, but Bryant even the scored before halftime, found the net in the second half and didn't let the Black Bears equalizing attempts to prosper.
• Freshman Olivia Bamford netted her first career goal in the first minute against UMass on Sept. 3 but the Minutewomen evened the score and then took the game in overtime, 2-1.
• UMaine got its first win of the season on Aug. 31 against Holy Cross when sophomore Kayla Brace scored in the 84th minute off of a cross from Bailey.
• Sophomore Annalena Kriebisch (1-4-1), who is second in America East in shutouts (2), has posted a 1.42 goals against average and a .786 save percentage while making 33 saves.
• Bailey leads the team with four points on one goal and a team-high two assists while Brace has one goal and one assist for three points.
 
About Marist
• The Red Foxes are coming off a 1-0 win at Seton Hall on Thursday night and sit at 3-3 overall.
• Alexa Svensson leads the team with five points on one goal and three assists while Camille Bowen is tops in goals with two.
• It was Bowen that scored the game-winning goal on Thursday as well as the winning strike against America East opponent New Hampshire.
• The Red Foxes have received goals from six different players and points from nine individuals.
• All three of the goalkeepers on the roaster have stood in goal, but Makala Foley (3-3-0) has seen the majority of the minutes, posting a 0.79 goals against average, a .857 save percentage and two shutouts.
 
The Series with Marist
• The two squads first met in 1995, with the Red Foxes winning the match, 2-1, but since then the Black Bears have won every meeting and hold the all-time series edge at 8-1-0.
• Head coach Scott Atherley got his first career win at the helm of the women's team against Marist with a 2-0 win on Sept. 12, 1999.
• The most recent meeting in 2015 saw UMaine come away with a 5-0 win on the road.
• The Black Bears have outscored the Red Foxes 25-3 in the series and have not allowed a goal in the last four meetings.
 
A Win Would…
• Move UMaine's all-time record against Marist to 9-1-0 and give UMaine its ninth-straight win in the series.
• Bump the Black Bears overall record to 2-4-1
• Give head coach Scott Atherley his 145th win at the helm of the UMaine women's team.

• Marist and UMaine share two opponents in New Hampshire and Vermont.

 About Head Coach Scott Atherley
• Now in his 25th season as a head coach in the NCAA, Scott Atherley is entering his 19th season as the Maine women's soccer program's head coach.
• Atherley has led the Black Bears to five-straight America East postseason tournaments and to 13 of the last 14 overall.
• In 1993, Atherley became head coach of the UMaine men's team and took on head coaching duties of the women's team in 1999, coaching both squads that year.
• Atherley was a four-year letter-winner at UMaine between 1984 and 1987, serving as captain during his final season.
 
First Time for Everything
Kendra Ridley's assist on Thursday against Bryant was the first of the senior captain's career.
• Three of UMaine's goals so far in 2017 have come off of the foot of a first-time goal scorer.
• Freshman Olivia Bamford netted the first of her career on Sept. 3 against UMass with her first minute tally while sophomore Nicole Bailey earned her first career helper on the play.
• Sophomore Kayla Brace saved her first career goal for a game-winner, as the sophomore found the net in the 84th minute of UMaine's 1-0 win over Holy Cross on Aug. 31.
• Against Brown, junior Mikayla Morin was able to head home the ball in the second half for her very first tally.
 
Ironwomen
• Senior defender Amy Falkin and sophomore goalkeeper Annalena Kriebisch are the only Black Bears to have played every single minute this season.
• Each player has logged 569 minutes through the first six games of the season.
• As a team, UMaine has 11 players that have logged at least 400 minutes and while junior Mikayla Morin, sophomore Emilie Andersen and senior Kendra Ridley have all played over 500.
 
Canadian Connection
• Sophomore Kayla Brace's game-winning score against Holy Cross on Aug. 31 was assisted by her classmate and fellow Canadian, Nicole Bailey.
• For Brace, who hails from Lewis Lake, Nova Scotia, it was her first career goal and point.
• For the Nepean, Ontario native, Bailey, it marked her first career assist.
 
Second Shutouts
Annalena Kriebisch has two shutouts so far this year to sit second overall in the America East.
• Both of them came against teams she earned a clean sheet against in 2016.
• She had seven saves on Aug. 31 for her second shutout in as many tries against Holy Cross after making six saves in last year's contest against the Crusaders.
• Maine's 0-0 affair on Aug. 20 marked her second consecutive shutout against LIU Brooklyn as she made four saves then and five saves a year ago for her first career clean sheet).
• The sophomore now has five career shutouts.
 
A Night of Firsts at Brown
• Junior Mikayla Morin scored the first goal of her career at Brown, heading the ball home in the 77th minute.
• The Aug. 25 match at Brown marked the first time in the now six-game series that the winning team did not earn a shutout.
• Maine held Brown without a shot on frame in the first half, marking the first time in nine games (Sept. 21, 2016) that Brown was held without a shot on goal in a full half.
 
First Tie in a Long Time
• Maine's 0-0 tie with LIU Brooklyn in the Aug. 20 season-opener marked the first time that the Black Bears have ever had a tie on opening day.
• It was also the program's first tie since a 1-1 affair with rival New Hampshire on Oct. 29, 2015.
• The most ties that Maine has ever had in a season is seven in 2008.
 
International Appeal
• The Black Bears have four different countries represented on the team roster in the United States, Canada, Norway and Germany.
• Maine has three players each that hail from Maine and Connecticut, and one each from New York, Georgia, Florida and New Hampshire.
 • There are three Canadian provinces represented with four players coming from Ontario, three from Nova Scotia and one from Quebec.
• There is a three-payer European contingent, with two players hailing from Norway and one from Germany.
 
Oh Captain, My Captain
Kendra Ridley will serve as the captain for the Black Bears this season, marking the third-straight year that the Ottawa, Ontario native will wear the armband.
 
Up Next
• The Black Bears will travel to Cornell on Saturday, Sept. 16 to battle the Big Red in the final non-conference contest of the season.
• UMaine will then return home to kick off America East action against Stony Brook on Sunday, Sept. 24 before traveling to Hartford on Thursday, Sept. 28.
