Soccer Travels to Cornell for Final Non-Conference Test

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine soccer team will play its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday when it travels to Cornell University to take on the Big Red in a 1 p.m. contest at Berman Field.

It will be just the second meeting between the Big Red and the Black Bears.

About the Black Bears
• UMaine moved to 2-4-1 on Sunday afternoon with its ninth-straight win over Marist, 2-1.
Kayla Brace converted a penalty kick in the ninth minute and then Kendra Ridley finished a corner to give the lead back to Maine in the 72nd-minute.
Annalena Kriebisch (2-4-1) made four saves to earn the win and now sports a 1.37 goals against average and a .787 save percentage.
• Maine opened up the season at home with a tie against LIU Brooklyn (0-0) before dropping an overtime match at Brown (1-2) and a home contest to Northeastern (0-3).
• UMaine got its first win of the season on Aug. 31 against Holy Cross (1-0) before battling through another tough overtime loss to UMass (2-1) and then a close home tilt to Bryant (1-2).
• Brace leads the Black Bears with two goals and one assist for five points while Nicole Bailey has four points on one goal and two assists and Ridley has one goal and one assist for three points.
 
About Cornell
• The Big Red is coming off of its first win of the season on Sept. 8, a 2-1 overtime win over Buffalo.
• The winning-goal came off the foot of Kennedy Yearby, who is one of three Cornellians tied for the team-lead with three goals along with Paige DeLoach and Shelby Wrap.
• Cornell started its season with three-straight losses to Syracuse (3-0), Eastern Washington (3-1), and Binghamton (2-0).
• Junior Meghan Kennedy (1-3-0) has seen the majority of minutes in goal for the Big Red, starting all four contests while posting a 2.47 goals against average and a .690 save percentage.
 
The Series with Cornell
• Cornell and Maine have met once before, in 2008 when the Black Bears traveled to Ithaca and earned a 2-0 win over the Ivy League squad.
• Christine Labelle and Veronique Fleury each scored for Maine while Jasmine Phillips made four saves for the shutout.
 
A Win Would…
• Move UMaine's all-time record against Cornell to 2-0.
• Bump the Black Bears overall record to 3-4-1
• Give head coach Scott Atherley a career record of 146-136-43 at the helm of the UMaine women's team.

 About Head Coach Scott Atherley
• Now in his 25th season as a head coach in the NCAA, Scott Atherley is entering his 19th season as the Maine women's soccer program's head coach.
• Atherley has led the Black Bears to five-straight America East postseason tournaments and to 13 of the last 14 overall.
• In 1993, Atherley became head coach of the UMaine men's team and took on head coaching duties of the women's team in 1999, coaching both squads that year.
• Atherley was a four-year letter-winner at UMaine between 1984 and 1987, serving as captain during his final season.
 
Common Opponents
• Cornell and UMaine share two opponents in Binghamton and Brown.
• The Big Red dropped a match to Binghamton (0-2) and has yet to take on Brown.
• The Black Bears lost to Brown in overtime (1-2) but have not yet faced Binghamton.
 
Rising Ridley
Kendra Ridley has tallied three points this year on one goal and one assist.
• The captain is now on the first multi-game point-streak of her career.
• The assist, which came on Sept. 7 against Bryant, was the first of her career.
• Both of Ridley's goals have been game winners, with her maiden tally last year against UMass-Lowell giving the Black Bears a 1-0 win.
 
First Time for Everything
Kendra Ridley's assist on Sept. 7 against Bryant was the first of the senior captain's career while freshman Charlotte Messer earned her first collegiate point by assisting on Ridley's tally against Marist on Sept. 10.
• Three of UMaine's goals so far in 2017 have come off of the foot of a first-time goal scorer.
• Freshman Olivia Bamford netted the first of her career on Sept. 3 against UMass with her first minute tally while sophomore Nicole Bailey earned her first career helper on the play.
• Sophomore Kayla Brace saved her first career goal for a game-winner, as the sophomore found the net in the 84th minute of UMaine's 1-0 win over Holy Cross on Aug. 31.
• Against Brown, junior Mikayla Morin was able to head home the ball in the second half for her very first tally.
 
Ironwomen
• Senior defender Amy Falkin and sophomore goalkeeper Annalena Kriebisch are the only Black Bears to have played every single minute this season.
• Each player has logged 659 minutes through the first seven games of the season.
• As a team, UMaine has 10 players that have logged at least 500 minutes while Emilie Andersen and Kendra Ridley have both played over 600.
 
Canadian Connection
• Sophomore Kayla Brace's game-winning score against Holy Cross on Aug. 31 was assisted by her classmate and fellow Canadian, Nicole Bailey.
• For Brace, who hails from Lewis Lake, Nova Scotia, it was her first career goal and point.
• For the Nepean, Ontario native, Bailey, it marked her first career assist.
 
A Night of Firsts at Brown
• Junior Mikayla Morin scored the first goal of her career at Brown, heading the ball home in the 77th minute.
• The Aug. 25 match at Brown marked the first time in the now six-game series that the winning team did not earn a shutout.
• Maine held Brown without a shot on frame in the first half, marking the first time in nine games (Sept. 21, 2016) that Brown was held without a shot on goal in a full half.
 
First Tie in a Long Time
• Maine's 0-0 tie with LIU Brooklyn in the Aug. 20 season-opener marked the first time that the Black Bears have ever had a tie on opening day.
• It was also the program's first tie since a 1-1 affair with rival New Hampshire on Oct. 29, 2015.
• The most ties that Maine has ever had in a season is seven in 2008.

International Appeal
• The Black Bears have four different countries represented on the team roster in the United States, Canada, Norway and Germany.
• Maine has three players each that hail from Maine and Connecticut, and one each from New York, Georgia, Florida and New Hampshire.
 • There are three Canadian provinces represented with four players coming from Ontario, three from Nova Scotia and one from Quebec.
• There is a three-payer European contingent, with two players hailing from Norway and one from Germany.
 
Oh Captain, My Captain
Kendra Ridley will serve as the captain for the Black Bears this season, marking the third-straight year that the Ottawa, Ontario native will wear the armband.

• UMaine will return home to kick off America East action against Stony Brook on Sunday, Sept. 24 before traveling to Hartford on Thursday, Sept. 28.
