Samantha Wagg recorded both goals on the day for Maine

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Despite a 20-11 advantage in shots and a 13-7 lead in shots on the goal, the University of Maine field hockey team dropped a 3-2 contest to Cornell in neutral-site action at Moulton Winder Field on the campus of the University of Vermont.

Trailing 2-0 after 16 minutes in the first half, the Black Bears fought back to tie the game at 2-2. Both of Maine's goals came off of penalty corners, with Samantha Wagg firing in both scores. Both goals were sent in on penalty corner from Emily Hindle, corralled in by Libby Riedl, and Wagg capitalizing on the shot opportunities at both the 19 and 23-minute marks.

Maine also held a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners, while Cornell held an 11-5 lead in saves. Cornell goalkeeper Kelly Johnson made 10 saves for the Big Red in between the pipes to hold off the Black Bear offense.

MAINE GAME NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Cornell snapped Maine's four-game winning streak, and have now taken the last three meetings in the series. However, the Black Bears still hold the all-time series by a count of 4-3
Today's game marks the first time this season that the opposition has scored more than one goal against the Black Bear defense.
Samantha Wagg is now tied for the team-lead in goals with five on the season and the junior ranks second on the team with 13 points.
The Black Bears have now outshot the opposition in five of six games this season.
Maine has still outscored the opposition by a 24-8 mark on the season, and have outshot opponents by an average of 23-7.2 in six games in 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Four of the five goals scored in the game came directly off of penalty corners, with Cornell's game-winner in the second half being the outlier.
Both of Maine's first half goals in the 19^th and 23^rd minute were the same combination of Emily Hindle starting the play on a penalty corner, with Libby Riedl settling the initial pass, and Wagg firing the shot past the Cornell goalkeeper.
Cornell's game winner came early on in the second half, when a shot by Sam McILwrick was redirected by Krysten Mayers at the 38 minute mark.
