Maine earns a share of the regular season East Division title

ORONO, Maine – The UMaine field hockey team fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex. While the Black Bears lost, they still share the regular season championship of the East Division of the America East with UAlbany. The Black Bears finish the 2017 regular season with a 12-5, 6-2 America East record, while New Hampshire ends its season with a 7-11, 4-4 America East record.

The University of Maine athletic department honored seniors Madison Cummings, Emma Cochran, and Emily Corbett pregame for their contributions to the field hockey program and the University. In four years, the three seniors have led the Black Bears to a 54-26 record.

Maine got on the scoreboard first in the 27^th minute, as Cummings scored on her senior day, tipping in a shot from Riley Field. The game was score less for over 20 minutes, until UNH's Katie Audino recorded a goal following a penalty corner. Bloem van den Brekel registered the game-winner in the 64^th minute.

Maine outshot UNH by an 18-15 margin, while the Wildcats' held an advantage in penalty corners at 9-3.

Emma Cochran (12-5) recorded a season-high nine saves in the loss, while UNH's Kelsey Rudert (7-10) made eight stops in net. Cochran held a 194 minute scoreless-streak entering the game, and extended the streak to 243 minutes before allowing the first UNH goal. The scoreless-streak marked Maine's longest since Maine did not allow a score for parts of five games in 2011.

With a 6-2 record in conference, Maine shares the regular season East Division title with UAlbany. The Great Danes earn the number one seed in the East Division due to second tiebreaker, which is the winning percentage in conference games versus the other conference opponents in descending rank order, since UAlbany went 2-0 against No. 3 seed New Hampshire this season.

The No. 25 Black Bears will face the No. 23 Pacific Tigers on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Cushing Field on the campus of UMass Lowell in the quarterfinals. The winner will play the victor of No. 17 Stanford and UMass Lowell in the semifinal round.
